why do fireflies have to die so fast?

Just watched Grave of the Fireflies. I think all my fellow US History students who keep begging the teacher to let us watch Pearl Harbor every 3 seconds because they think it's an "awesome" movie ("awesome" meaning it has big FX and guns and things blowing up) should all be forced to watch Grave of the Fireflies in a double-feature with Pearl ( Read more... )

History is something I hold very close in my heart. It's worth is not in the events themselves, but understanding what inspired those events. I.e. people for the most part.
History is (as apparently my dad's old history teacher said,) chaps and chapesses. If one understands this, understands that history is about the decions people made, that people are inheriently the same now as they were then, that every side has an argument. Even the worst of butchers came from the same place as we did. History is vital, as it allows throught, introspection, and a wide view point.
History is one of my favorite subjects, we had a brilliant teacher in high school (though I didn't do well at A levels, I did great in GCSE, an A as I recall.) and he instaulled a great love of it in me. I'm dreadful at remembering facts of course, but the stories remain...
Ah, I love history...

Oh, I feel you. I adore history. The problem is, my teacher adores history, too -- and he teaches every little event exactly as he feels about it, and no one is interested enough to question his opinion. It's a dead classroom. I want to scream at them sometimes to wake up and realize that history is not just memorization, but I know they wouldn't get it.

History is more about feeling than about fact, and every other subject stems from it. I think that's why I love it so much, because you can't study anything else without history getting involved. And it's probably why I dislike math -- because we only get taught the dry numbers, with none of the stories behind their discovery or explanations of why they work that you could get out of history.

Anyway, rambling again. ^_^. So comforting to know there's another kindred spirit out there. I'm sure there are others, but man are they hard to find in a town like this... *makes face*

Your writing, I must say, amazes me. It is very complex but it is so that I can comprehend it quite easily. As for my comments, I know what you mean about living in a town where everyone just does enough to get by. Your interpretations of history, in my opinion, are very right. I agree with your thoughts and I really want to know more about the way you feel about other subjects or even events. For example, what are your thoughts on religion (all types)?
