Fic: Dying of the Light (Authority)

Dec 29, 2009 04:21

Ahh! I wrote a whole ten-page story! When did that happen?

The Authority is one of those source materials (like Harry Potter, like Torchwood, like most fandoms in which I've written fic) that's so full of holes you could write for a lifetime and not fill in all the missing scenes, let alone add new plots. I love, love, love writing missing-scene ( Read more... )

Ooooh, I don't even know where to begin - this one is wonderful! You manage it to capture both the individual characters (all of them! Not only M & A) and the way they work as a team, with so much affection for each other even though they will not always openly show it.

There are too many beautiful pictures and images to name and I can't pick just a single one. Your Midnighter is so spot on, with all his rage and all his hurting and his cold self-control sliding into something else. And Angie, oh Angie - the way she reacts, the way she stars healing.

Anyway, I can only hope that it is not your last fic for the Authority. And that, if you ever happen to write something, you'll post it again. Thank you so much for this story!

Thank you! I'm so glad all the characters worked! I zoomed through the comics and was worried I wouldn't have picked up a good grasp on their voices. And oh, I love Angie dearly; I think I like her as a de facto leader better than Jack. I like Jack, but he never seemed like leader material to me. Angie is way more level-headed in a crisis, and where Jack is pretty much nothing without his powers, Angie's still a perfectly healthy human supergenius.

I have another few bits started, but none of them are coming as easily as this one did. I'm gonna keep poking at them and see what happens, though! And I'll definitely share the results. :D

Freaking-A, man. All right, first of all, that broke my heart. Second, you somehow fixed it. This was a fantastic piece, and I'm so glad you shared it with us! (Popped in over from theauthority btw.)

You have an amazing ability for mood setting, and I loved how the story was set up--from beginning to end it was.. really all the components I'd have loved to see (more of) in this particular storyline of the comics. The sheer bleakness of the gradually worsening situation the team found themselves in was just devastating--quite a different thing from the comic just dropping the reader into the middle of the action. And still, watching the team rally, reform as best they could, and carry on with that note of hope at the end was really beautifully done. (I just had to grin at the relish in Midnighter, as he goes back to Apollo like, Hey remember how we used to kick supervillain heads in when The Authority was in its prime? Yeah, let's go do that XD) Beautiful, bleak, and with wonderful resilient characterization to boot ( ... )

Excuse me for a moment while I SQUEE! I love your art to bits! I've been meaning to go back and add many-years-late comments to some of your pieces, but I keep getting sucked back into reading theauthority's archives... I will start combing back through and adding reviews eventually, swear. lksjag;oselahgh... Apollo/ponytail <3. The wedding! *faints*

Okay, I'm back. :D Thank you so much for your kind review! I know the comic, even with all this "known for trendsetting decompression" business, still has to be way more compressed than I would like. I don't begrudge the comic the fact that it needs to tell an engaging action story, but I love filling in the character-driven gaps. I'm like that in most of my fandoms... I rarely come up with fresh adventures, just break down ones they've already had.

I was trying to come up with a way to end the story that wasn't so damn depressing, and then Angie handed me one. I was right in line with Midnighter when I realized that, "Hey, wait a minute... this isn't a goodbye. Why am I treating it like goodbye ( ... )

Oh. wow. I really can't describe how much I enjoyed this fic. You painted broken Unlondon beautifully, with all the post-apocalyptic crap going down. And your characterisation was just as amazing. Midnighter alone and withdrawn and guilt-ridden Swift and Angie! I love survivor, get-things-done, arse kicking World's End Angie so much. Thanks for posting this!

This is way late, but as I'm just entering Authority fandom now, I'm going back through the lj archives.

This was really good writing. Good pacing, good voices, good description, all that. I could just imagine Midnighter's face when the strange woman hugged him, as opposed to when Apollo did.

The reunion was beautiful. We could see what Midnighter was thinking, but he didn't say much; very like him. There was desperation in him, but could he ever put that into words? Maybe not. Good job showing it anyway.
