Congrats on finishing the book. I guessed the whodunnit in the beginning, but then JKR succesfully distracted me with red herrings. I was sure the culprit was Bestigui at one point - only it was just too obvious ( ... )

Not knowing much about Cornish mythology, I didn't catch the Giant reference - thanks for that! :)

Cormoran seemed more obvious to most people I've talked to, but maybe because some of us are birdwatchers. And then he's the son of Leda, associated with swans. When you throw in the name Robin and the Batman joke - black wings/cape and all like a cormorant - it becomes more apparent.

That's a very good question about why he hired Strike. I answered over on HPN.

It is explained in the end, though in my opinion it is not an obvious reason, unluckily. Strike says he thinks Bristow hired him bc he knew the will existed (althoug he didn´t know where it was). So it could appear at any time, and leave him with nothing (Lula´s money, I mean. So he wanted Lula´s brother, Jonah, to be arrested (he appeared in the CCTV video, running away after Lula´s death. So Bristow hired Strike bc he thought the truth was never going to appear, and bc he wanted to have Jonah arrested in the case the will appeared.
Hope I could have answered your question :)

The title is also a bird reference, of course. Lula Landry's nickname is "Cuckoo" and she literally falls out of the nest - I mean, her apartment. In nature, a cuckoo is a bird that displaces eggs in other birds nests, and we are told that Lula was adopted as a replacement child for her brother Charlie, who also died from a fall into a quarry. There are many references to clocks as well - Strike notes that the whole building where Lula Landry lives is like one of those cuckoo clocks with people going in and out of little doors. In one of the bars where he meets someone, Strike sees a "wall of clocks," and the murderer, Bristow, fools his mother by changing the time on her alarm clock.
