Should We Pity Snape? Is He a Hero?

There's a new essay floating around about Snape, this time giving him full credit for what he accomplished, but as always there's a catch.

Thanks to bnmc2005 for the link:

"Severus Snape Does Not Deserve Your Pity"
by Emily Asher-Perrin

This line is particularly disturbing:

The point is that Severus Snape is not a hero, and wouldn’t want to be ( Read more... )

Ugh. I think I'll give this one a pass, too. ;-) Thanks for the recap so I don't have to look.

It's literally just a re-run of every other anti-Snape essay, such as "The Deification of Severus Snape" - our discussion of that one is Here. What's deceptive is that the author starts out pretending to praise him, but gets more and more critical until he's a little creepy stalker unworthy of praise.

I guess certain fans will be re-posting this same type of essay over and over until the end of time. Hopefully there will always be Snape fans here to defend his character.

"Welcome to the canon. Hope you stay long enough to read the books again."

I doubt it. I also doubt it would make a difference, the author has gotten too sure she is right to accept factual input that contradicts these views.

Thank you so much. i missed this essay and it is just so good and spot on. The author really got how creepy and stalkerish Snape was with Lily. Ugh, he made my skin crawl. And did you notice that the vast majority of the comments agreed with the author. There was comments from the very few Snape fans that posted but that was a case of a few posting a lot. I wonder if that is why some people think Snape has a lot of fans? I've always thought that the Snape fans were few but very loud, instead of many posting a little. Thank you again for the link.

We get it. You have an unhealthy obsession with Snape and can't even bear to read a rational argument against that. This was a good essay. It's not so much against Snape as it is against this "pity" that some people have for him.

BTW, JK Rowling's words: Snape is an anti-hero. (that doesn't mean villain, but it also doesn't mean hero).

You know I got that as well. The author does not hate Snape, she simply doesn't pity someone who just loved his slights and cherished them close to his heart. And then took out his venom on a classroom of children. I loved Rowlings picture of Snape brooding over the unfairness of life. Perfect example of a self pitying jerk.
