When I first came across this news I was not even looking for Hobbit news and assumed it was a hoax (though I immediately went to look for evidence it was not, LOL). The inner fangirl wins out on this - I will trust Jackson to make something spectacular out of these movies until he proves me wrong!

Just from watching the trailer, Jackson has made me like the Dwarves more than I did when readng the book, so I'm pretty excited about it. Plus, we always need more Gandalf. This way Ian McKellan is assured a movie a year for three years.

I thought it was strange it was going to even be two movies in the first place. I could see making each book of LotR into two movies. The Hobbit? Sorry, there just ain't as much there.

If he wanted to use material from the Silmarillion, why not make a Silmarillion film?

That's probably the next project after the Hobbit! LOL "Beren and Luthien" in three movies.

I hope not, the characters are so noble they don't even fart after eating onions and beans.

the Silmarillion is very interesting when you are interested in the details of a fiction world as it sprung up in the mind of a geneous, but for the rest it is a pretty boring story with rather distant characters one does hardly relate too.
enough material to fill out a good existing story, but not a good story on its own legs.

I'm actually quite looking forward to 3 parts. It sounds as if they might go deeper into backstories that weren't in the actual 'Hobbit' book, but were part of the others. At least, that is what I am hoping.

For example, since Christopher Lee has commented on Sylvester McCoy's role as Radagast the Brown, saying it is "A considerably important part", but he is more of a mention in the actual 'Hobbit' book, it might be much more fleshed out in the movie - possibly showing a bit of how Saruman used and fooled Radagast that was actually in the Lord of the Rings, but left out of that movie.

Future casting? hwyla August 6 2012, 16:52:13 UTC
I've noticed on the-hobbit-movie.com on the 'video production blog 8' page that Thor and Thrain are still 'tbc' for casting. I am not positive whether that means to be cast or to be confirmed, however the listing of them as 'cast' does imply a certain amount of backstory to be filled into one of the movies (2 or 3), as they are already dead by the time the dwarves meet Bilbo ( ... )

You'll have to add me to those who are all excited about three movies. I know, I know...more ain't necessarily better.

But it's more. :D
