I just saw the video. It was a little bit bummer. I thought everything would be ready today.

Here are my thoughts on Pottermore

Yes, I'm a little stunned that it's not open to everyone until October. This "chosen few" thing gets old after a while.

So that's going to be her portal for selling ebooks. I guess Amazon is out of luck this time.

Did you hear her mention of sharing new details about the books? Is this to replace the idea of the Scottish Book?

I think you have to play games to unlock info. I guess the Scottish Book wasn't working for her. I don't want to freakin play games for stuff, i couldn't be bothered, I just wanted the info all in a book, and even then, she'd probably have stuff in there that would shatter my illusions :p

Sounds more like a commerce adventure.

Yes, as Steve Martin says in "The Jerk" "Oh! It's a money-makin' deal! Take a chance and win some crap."

(Well, it's not that bad, but it's all about controlling the money from these ebooks.)

Will it be canon? exhpfan June 23 2011, 14:39:01 UTC
I can just see the arguments on all the discussion forums about how their position on a certain subject or character is now conclusively proven by things JKR decides to write on this site. I am almost certain that Harry Potter Canon will now be changing on a regular basis. I don't know if an author has ever tried to address literary discussion of his/her works by having a website available to change or add to the works after they are written. Will all of you accept what JKR writes on this site as "canon" or not?

I don't imagine I will spend much time on the site. I can't decide if I should join the site as Paintball or exhpfan. I wonder how long it will take me to get banned from the site?

Oh, yes, it's going to cause lots of controversies about the canon, no doubt about it.

So in a way it will be fun to get new information, but in another way it's going to drive people crazy. Because the fact is, JKR sees these characters differently than the fans in almost every way. And readers would rather imagine their own backgrounds and connections instead of taking her word for it.

But it's all about control. I guess this is the online equivalent of the Scottish Book, so we probably can't expect to see that published anytime soon. So much for the "fear of encyclopedias" that would take over JKR's franchise (remembering the Lexicon trial).

So will you accept whatever JKR says about Snape or not? She can hurt or help your argument about his redemption. Will you only accept her position if you agree with it and then cite it as canon, but if you disagree with her will you argue that it isn't canon to those using JKR's views as canon that can't be disputed?

As far as I'm concerned, JKR agreed with me about Snape back in 2007 when DH was published.

The problem is that when the book was leaked early she discovered that many fans felt betrayed or confused by Snape's redemption, so to placate them she started saying he was a "bully till the end" but she also said some highly positive things about him, trying to please both sides.

I take the book as canon for Snape, end of story. I would like to know more of his backstory and that of his parents. If she tells us that, I will be happy. Backstory doesn't bother me at all ~ it's the revision of the books that I don't like.

I'm a bit disappointed. I'm not sure what I thought it was going to be, but, it wasn't that...so, I guess we get to "live" the books ourselves..and, like exhpfan said, what is this going to do to "canon." Will the books in print still be condsidered that, or, will canon be whatever comes into her head while she's interacting on this website? I'm not sure if this is a plus or a minus right now.

I tried to enter my e-mail, but, of course, it's so busy that was a joke. Guess I'll go into a "wait and see" mode for now.

It has crashed for me as well, so I'm just going to wait.

I had a feeling it was something to do with ebooks just because JKR said something about them a few weeks before this.

The "new canon" is going to drive fans insane. Some of it will be good, and some of it will probably make no sense. I don't really know what to think of it yet. It's like getting her Encyclopedia in bits and pieces at a time.

Pottermore site is back up to register e-mails to become one of the "First Million." After reading over more reviews about it I have really mixed feelings. I can see where Ms. Rowling would want more control over her own creations, especially after seeing what WB did with Half-Blood Prince. But, I hope she doesn't use this as a vehicle to try to force her opinion of the characters on the readers. I'm anxious to read the back stories. I, like rattlesnakeroot, just don't want to see her trying to re-write the books through this venue.

It looks like she's putting her own money into developing this, so that gives her full control and she doesn't have to kiss butt or pander to some advertiser. Wonder what this will do to the HP Lexicon? I still wish she'd do "Hogwarts: A History." I'd love to read that. Maybe she'll cover that on Pottermore.
