I've been reading a slash story in which a heated argument between the couple (who are also friends) results in punch being thrown, and then the one punched actually finds the aggression a turn on and it goes on to sex. Somehow this combination of sex and violence doesn't work for me at all, not even in fiction, where I'm not averse to ( Read more... )

I agree. Domestic violence is not fun to read about in fact or fiction. Eroticizing it doesn't help. Wrestling types of struggles don't get to me, but punching? Yikes.

What gets to me is that authors don't seem to realize the problematic associations. If it was just enemy slash or messed up relationships it would be one thing, but I've seen this crop up out of the blue in pairings who are good friends and heroes, not villain types. Punching seems to be as unremarked in slash as the het cliche (which I also dislike) of a woman slapping a guy and then the guy thinking that she is "temperamental" and finding that hot or something.

Yeah. Punching is the start of something ugly.

As far as craftsmanship of solid fiction, I read it as one of those non sequitur items that lets me know I'm reading someone who hasn't got a clue how to transition the action in their own story.

I think it could be that a kink preference just overlaps, so that for them the connection is clear, but if you don't share it, it's very WTF? I mean, I usually I read along fine with the escalating argument and then a character loosing their temper may stretch it sometimes but I often can go with that, but the step that the one punched finds the aggression displayed a turn on completely looses me ( ... )
