classic crossover rec

Nov 19, 2008 23:40

The fanlore wiki doesn't just cause me even more online activity dreams, it also makes me reminisce about past fandoms, and think fondly of fic I've read. Unfortunately too often I can't find the stories again, because sites and archives vanish ( Read more... )

recs: hlots, x-files, recs: crossovers, crossovers, recs: x-files

I loved those stories! (and I thought I put a link to this in the wiki, but I must have just listed them, and not looked for a link. ouch.) I know I saved those stories, but that was 3 or 4 hard drive failures ago -- I'm pretty sure I don't have them now.

The HLOTS stories I was looking for I think were also by Saundra Mitchell -- they were gen, and a wacky au, where the cops from the book were real people, but also characters in the story, and then the cops from the TV show were actors who were characters in the story, and there were fans -- I'm doing a terrible job explaining it, but it was wacky meta fiction, and very cool, and I haven't been able to find it for years.

The wiki links the first five stories on the HLOTS page. Well there was a formatting error so clicking didn't work, but the URL was sound, when fixing that I looked at the site and noticed that at that place only the first five stories are archived (up to Trace Evidence I), so I thought I'd find a more complete link, but that didn't work out so well in practice.

I don't think I ever read her HLOTS only stories, because I watched only a couple of eps of that series and read the xover more as a Mulder fan. But it's so sad when stories vanish.

I think this is the story you're thinking of? :D

And, er, Saundra Mitchell seems to be publishing children's books and other things under that name, which is probably why she took most of her fic offline, so it might be nicer to send them to people by email rather than put up public links. Just, I'm always sympathetic to people who used their real names in fandom early on and then DEEPLY REGRETTED IT.

--wait never mind, I saw that they're archived at Gossamer, not wayback-machined. IGNORE ME.

Yeah, I only linked to the WB for indexing because it is the only place I found that listed all. The current Gossamer is under a different pseud, Hope, but still with the same email iirc and I had no idea that it was a intentional pseud shift (I mean people use different names in different places all the time), because on other sites some of the stories are still under the other. (Like, the links to the first set still under the old name go to a site that's still updated as of 2008 and there was no pseud shift performed on that site.) And they are recced all over the place and on awards pages that list the author name but go to dead links, so you still get more hits for the older pseud.

I really don't think my LJ posts is making more of a connection than there commonly is. But yeah, RL name only works well if yours is something like "Jane Smith"...

If not, no prob and thanks so, so much for all your lovely recs!

I've been bookmarking stories to use for a 30-day fanfic meme. I'm adding a few extra days for things like "Favorite Crossover," and this mega-series is still the best crossover I've ever read.

So while tracking down the pieces, I found your wonderful entry (plus the author's comments). Instead of reinventing the wheel, I may link to this entry--if that's OK.

I can't find Empty Cage online either, so that's probably going to be one of my choices for "Favorite fic that's no longer online," disappointing since this was one of the best stories in the series. However, I just started going through some 10-year-old disks today and the first one had Ties That Bind and Empty Cage.

And on the topic of fanfics that are no longer on line, do you have a copy of the metafic, Permanently Offline? There's one I've been trying to track down (con attendee gets murdered, the fanfic writers are the suspects), and I think this is it.

I never mind links to my public entries, so linking is fine. Unfortunately I don't have a copy of Permanently Offline.

Would you be willing to share Empty Cage with me? My email addy is melodyunity [at] yahoo [dot] com.

You are a goddess, btw -- the goddess of fanfiction! I was just thinking about this series and wishing I had saved copies of it back in the day when I found this! Thank you so much for tracking down all of these links.
