In re: Tony being smarmy. Yup, he does that--not usually quite on the *level* he did with Peter in that particular pre-Civil War arc, but it is one of the things he does. He tends to think he knows what's best for people.
I *think* the way it worked with the moving in thing was that Peter was officially Tony's assistant, and since *Tony's* identity was publicly known (and Tony's *association* with the Avengers/Iron Man has never been a secret anyway), that allowed Peter to be associated with the Avengers without necessarily compromising his secret ID? But it wasn't dealt with very clearly, I agree.

Yeah, somehow there's a real disconnect between "we are ruthless supremacists out for world domination" and "so we'll wear dorky hoodies with a giant squid logo to intimidate people!"
