I blame my parents and guidance counselors for not broadening my career horizons.

OMG SRSLY. D: We can blame our shallow Asian parents, but what about career counselors?? Aren't they supposed to inform us about our options and help us explore possibilities?? Otherwise what are career counselors FOR? Schools really should focus more on preparing students for entering the working world. I remember back in high school we had a career day where seniors signed up for different seminars... but even so the choices were the obvious ones. I think I took a class on theater costume design and a dance class. From this I figured out that I DIDN'T want to be a costume designer, but that's about it. I went home and practiced the dance moves I'd learned, just for kicks, and my parents made fun of me. D:

If you could go back, what would you want to be? :O

Career counselors, for the most part, are academics who have no idea what the real world is like. I totally agree that our education systems should have classes on the real working world and accept the fact that not everyone will become doctors and lawyers. They should also teach personal finance too, but that's another topic.

At least you had "career day". We didn't even have auto shop at my highschool.

If I could go back, I'd want to look into some kind of consumer product development and/or marketing career or getting a ASE mechanic certification.

My mom hates the Asian "Doctors and Lawyers" stigma and tried to avoid it by forcing me to become a research scientist. But doesn't she realize she's doing the same thing?? X_X

OMG yes, I would totally include personal finance in the category of "preparing students for entering the working world" -- because hey, when you start working, you're going to have money! And so many people don't know how to handle their money!

No auto shop even ?? wow that sucks =x
There was a good career quiz going around online a while back... if they would even just spend an hour or so having kids do that test in school, it would probably help a LOT of kids figure out what they want to do. Kids these days are so directionless... =(

Research scientist isn't that far off from being a doctor. I'm not limiting the "doctor" category to only medicine.

Another thing that I give props to the military for is that they are actually pretty good at placing people in career fields they are good at/enjoy although I never had the balls to join. My advice to kids who don't know what to do in life is to join the military. Preferably Air Force or Navy if they don't want to be in ground combat. Don't just waste time and money going to college and getting a useless degree. Join the ROTC program. From what I've seen, the military is the best career counselor out there. Unless you live in San Francisco, I don't think having a military background is ever a negative.
