Arthur can’t be sure, but from the corner of his eye there’s a flash of red and white, enough to make him want to follow. He dismounts, hoping Merlin has the sense to see his horse and wait for him, and then makes his way through the forest quietly. It takes no time for him to catch up; the sorcerer moves so slowly, hobbling through the trees, no thought given to how much noise he makes. Arthur mentally mocks Dragoon’s lack of stealth until he remembers this man has magic. He has so little to fear.
Suddenly, Dragoon stops and looks around and Arthur steps back behind a tree, hoping the man’s eyes are not sharp in his old age. After a moment, when nothing happens, Arthur risks another look.
Dragoon has a small bottle in his hand and he brings it to his mouth and drinks, grimacing at the taste. It’s a potion, Arthur knows, but for what end? Dragoon hisses and writhes before hunching over, and then when he rights himself it is not him but-MerlinWithout thinking, Arthur unsheathes

And then Merlin looks up and his face contorts into fear and he pushes Arthur, sends him sprawling on the ground. Arthur feels an invisible force, sees dust kick up from where it strikes the ground, the place Arthur was just standing. Merlin staggers backwards and falls but is immediately scrambling to get up
