the_kellephant, I loved your prompts and pairings! I couldn't resist Harry/Charlie, though, when this idea came to me. I hope you like it! :)
Wandering slowly out onto the balcony of their hotel room, Harry smiled. The hustle and bustle of London had not suited him at all, but it was nice to come back to every now and then. Raising his arms up above his head, he stretched, his smile widening when he both felt and heard his shoulders popping.
"That sounds healthy."
"Yeah, probably not. But it feels good."
A low chuckle was Charlie's only response before wrapping his arms around Harry's waist. He was always so warm, his body heat more than capable of keeping Harry warm in the chilly air. Leaning back into the embrace, Harry placed his hands over Charlie's, lacing their fingers together.
"What time did you tell your mother we'd be at the Burrow?"
Molly had not been happy that Harry had chosen to move over to Romania and work on the reserve with Charlie after the war. At first, at least. When they had finally confessed to their relationship, however, she had brightened considerably.
"Not until lunch." Leaning closer, Charlie rubbed his beard against Harry's throat, causing him to squirm. "We've got a few hours."
Harry's stomach flipped pleasantly. Turning his head, he caught Charlie's lips in a soft kiss.
"A few hours? Did you have something in mind?"
It was difficult to see from his current position, but Harry was certain Charlie was grinning. He tried to shift out of the grip Charlie had on him, but Charlie only tightened it.
"Stay here."
"Charlie?" Harry turned the second Charlie released him, but was stopped by Charlie holding a hand out. "What-?"
"Do you trust me?"
Charlie's eyes danced as he smiled. A rush of happiness ran through Harry at the sight, causing him to grin back.
"Of course."
"Then wait there."
Harry's limbs tingled with anticipation as Charlie practically bounced back into the room. He flexed his fingers and licked his lips, an old nervous habit. When Charlie didn't come back after a few seconds, Harry took a small step towards the door.
"Stay there!"
Letting out a sigh, Harry turned back around. They had been in London for the past three days. Technically, they had arrived for Charlie's 35th birthday in two days, but they were really there for Christmas with the family. With the two so close together, they had just decided to combine them that year. Harry took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Pacing towards the railing, he rested his forearms on it and stared out over the city. He was aware that nothing would be able to settle the excitement he was feeling over whatever it was that Charlie was up to, but he did try.
"Charlie?" He didn't really dare turn around. Not after Charlie seeming to be able to see him from around the corner. "What are you doing?"
"I'm not doing anything."
Charlie's voice was much closer to Harry than he had expected, and he gasped. Turning, he kept his hands behind his back on the railing. Charlie was making his way slowly towards him, smiling wide. Harry ran his eyes over him, checking for changes. When he saw nothing different, he frowned.
"You said-"
"I know what I said."
Charlie ducked his head and ran a hand along the back of his neck. When he raised his head again, his smile looked much more nervous. He reached for Harry, wrapping an arm around his waist. Harry leant in close, more than willing to absorb Charlie's warmth. When Charlie did and said nothing more, Harry nudged him with his shoulder.
"Should I be nervous?"
Raising the hand that wasn't wrapped around Harry's waist, Charlie used his fingertips to tilt Harry's chin up. Harry's heart thudded against his ribs in the seconds before Charlie claimed his lips in a soft kiss.
"I should be nervous, I think, not you."
Harry could hear the nerves Charlie spoke of in his voice. His eyes were still dancing, though, so there was also excitement underlying them as well. Taking a steadying breath, Harry let it out slowly.
"Alright then, so…?"
Charlie cleared his throat. The arm around Harry's waist tightened for a few seconds before relaxing a bit.
"I've actually been thinking about this for a long time now," Charlie began, staring out over the city. "It was going to be this whole big thing at first. But… Well, big things aren't really 'us', are they?"
An idea began forming in the back of Harry's mind; a slight indication of what might be about to happen. His heartrate kicked up several notches and he licked his lips.
"They really aren't, no."
Charlie glanced over and flashed him a quick grin. "Mum suggested I do it as a birthday present for you next year."
Charlie's hand clenched in the small of Harry's back. Unable to help it, Harry moved half a step closer. Charlie's beard twitched, indicating another grin.
"But I didn't want to wait that long."
Heart thumping so hard he could hear it in his ears, Harry leant in to brush his lips along the shell of Charlie's ear. "To do what?"
He let out a surprised laugh when Charlie grabbed him properly around the waist and pulled him close to his chest. Leaning back against the railing, Charlie met his eyes with something bordering on confidence. The shaking of his hands against Harry's back was the only indication of the nerves he had spoken of.
"I love you, Harry."
Reaching up to loop his arms around Charlie's shoulders, Harry brushed their lips together softly. "Love you, too."
Instead of responding, Charlie tightened his grip on Harry and kissed him properly. Pressed as close as he was, Harry couldn't help feeling the physical effect the moment was having on Charlie. He smiled into the kiss, humming and rocking his hips.
"Marry me, Harry."
Harry's heart soared. His cheeks were beginning to hurt from smiling. Resting their foreheads together, he let out a happy sigh.
"Yes."
Charlie made a small, enquiring sound. "Yes?"
Laughing, Harry kissed him again. "Of course I will."
They didn't surface for air for a long time. Just enjoying the buzz of elation, Harry allowed himself to drift along on the high. By the time they broke apart, they were both panting.
"Hold on."
Harry couldn't help the yelp he let out as Charlie scooped him up in his arms. Moving them off into the bedroom, Charlie chuckled.
"You can be my early birthday present."
