The halls of Hogwarts had always been draughty. In fact, the higher in the castle you got, the higher the chances you would freeze your bollocks off. Rabastan knew this, but it had never deterred him.

"What's this about, then?"

Rabastan smiled as he placed his palm flat against the stone wall in front of him. Leaning casually in this kind of cold wind was uncomfortable at best, but he knew he had to keep up the charade.

"I think you know, Argus." He kept his voice low, at a pitch just above the howling wind. When Filch swallowed audibly, Rabastan smiled. "I think you've known for a while now."

Argus Filch had been an easy mark. Twitchy and nervous around the students that he was barely older than, he had taken an early interest in Rabastan. It had been a risk to assume that the reason Filch had taken to following him around the castle went beyond mere janitorial reasons. It seemed that it was a risk that was about to pay off, however.

"Dunno what yer talkin' about, Lestrange. Now git outta my way."

Rabastan wasn't as stupid as most people seemed to think he was. He may not have been intelligent in the same way as his brother, but he knew the way of things. People fascinated him, and this one person in particular… His smile widened as Filch tried to sidestep him.

"Don't tell me you wouldn't like an ally in this place, Argus. You know me; know who my family are. You're smart enough to know that I can be of great assistance to you here."

"'Assistance'?" Filch's pale, watery blue eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Dunno whatchu think you can assist me with, but-"

He stopped when Rabastan began to chuckle. Making another attempt to sidestep him, Filch frowned when Rabastan again moved to block his path.

"I'm graduating in a few months, Argus. You know what the world outside these walls is like. You know that making friends with the right people is the wise thing to do right now." Something flashed through Filch's eyes, encouraging Rabastan on. Moving closer, he lowered his voice again. "You're a smart man, Argus. You know this is the right thing to do."

Taking the chance, Rabastan placed a hand gently on Filch's shoulder. He knew he was in when it wasn't immediately shaken off.

"What are you talkin' about?"

Rabastan smiled again. Placing his arm around Filch's shoulders, he began to steer him out of the windy corridor and into an abandoned classroom. He may not have been the brightest one in his family, but he knew the value of people. Gathering allies before leaving Hogwarts was the wisest decision he could have made, and the Hogwarts caretaker was one of his better choices.
