It had been a week since Bellatrix had spoken to him, but he decided to break the silence between them himself.

“Come to my bed tonight,” Rodolphus said.

She stopped in the doorway of their bedroom and slowly turned towards him.

Even though they normally slept in different beds now, they often had to pretend that wasn’t the case to keep up appearances with their parents.

“No, find someone else to warm it.”

“You are my wife and vowed to give me children. Also, do you really expect me to have another affair knowing what you will do to her?” he said, anger bleeding into his words.

A few years into their marriage, Rodolphus what he wanted from another witch because he wasn’t able to get what he needed from Bellatrix. When she had found out she tortured and killed the witch in front of him instead of leaving them be. Since then, he decided the price wasn’t worth it.

“That’s not important. What is important thought is that I never vowed or agreed to anything. My father did. If I had my choice, I would never have married anyone least of all you,” Bellatrix spat.

Her words cut him deeply.

Rodolphus knew she had never loved him and that was something he would just have to accept.

It didn’t matter what she said or did though he would love her until the day he died.

He loved her even though she would burn him with her icy glare and cruel words. Rodolphus was also sure that she dishonoured him by bringing other men to her bed - although he couldn’t be sure as it never happened here at his family home. It was just a suspicion from the way Bellatrix flirted with other men in front of him.

“Why didn’t you call off the wedding then?” he asked.

It was obvious that Rodolphus’ emotions were simmering under the surface and that he was trying to keep them in check.

“Because I wasn’t allowed to. I would rather have spent my life alone than being tied to you, or anyone for that matter.”

Silence met her words.

It didn’t surprise Rodolphus that she felt like that. Bellatrix always wanted to do things her own way rather than do what society expected of her.

“I love you. I don’t care if you love me or not, but why can’t you give me a child? Why not just fulfill that part of the contract and then we can live separately?” Rodolphus said almost pleadingly.

“Because I don’t want one, and we’re already living apart so what’s the difference?” she asked.

He had no answer for that. There was no way to force her into having a baby, and even if he could, Rodolphus wouldn’t.

A few months later and the two of them had talked even less than before and Rodolphus was tempted to break the promise to himself and find a mistress. He had even gone as far as telling his brother about it.

“It’s about time, Dolph. Bellatrix is nothing but a selfish harpy and you deserve better,” Rabastan said.

“What if she changes her mind and kills this witch like the last?” he said, voicing his fears.

“That won’t be your fault. I know you love her, and I know how much you wish you could have that type of marriage with her but Bella has given you ‘permission’ and therefore she
shouldn’t be surprised if you take her up on the offer,” Rabastan replied.

“I know you’re right, but I’m just worried about the consequences.”

Rabastan had tried his best to reassure him that everything would be okay, and he wanted to believe that more than anything. A feeling in his gut told him that it wouldn’t be that easy.
