“Why is it that you can never show my field any sort of respect, Minerva?” Sybill asked sharply as she barged into the teachers’ lounge, the door banging off the wall.

“What on earth are you talking about?” Minerva asked calmly, puffing on the end of an unlit pipe.  She set her book to the side in preparation for the Divination professor’s attack.

“Two of my students told me you announced to their class that Divination is the most imprecise branch of magic, but you know I am quite the adept Diviner!” she huffed angrily, her hands on her hips.

Minerva closes her eyes briefly, sighing.  Then she stood to face Sybill Trelawney, setting her pipe away.  “I have never seen any proof of that,” she tells the other witch calmly, trying hard to keep the accusation out of her voice.

Sybill gasped, drawing her shawl tightly around her as if in protection against Minerva’s words.  “You said… you told me…” She looked around them as if someone might be hiding in the corner.  “You said that when I came, I went into a trance! Do not lie to me, Minerva.”

She paused, pettily relishing in making Sybill wait for her response.  “You did,” she finally replied.  “During which you said that our love would burn forever.  Clearly, this is untrue.”  Minerva did not look away, her jaw set and her eyes narrowed.

Sybill clutched at her heart as if she were surprised by these words.  “Minerva, you must understand…” she began to say, but then stopped dramatically, looking tortured by her own thoughts.

Minerva waited, giving her former lover a chance to explain herself.  She did not.  Minerva pursed her lips and nodded sharply.  “I understand perfectly well,” she said, brushing past her and briskly walking away.

“You can’t burn forever,” Sybill whispered in her wake.  “I know what that prophecy meant.  At some point it would kill us.  I can’t let that happen to you.”  Minerva, out of range of hearing, did not turn around.  Sybill let her go.
