Hope was all she had left.

The hope that he would, that he could, get them out of there.

She knew he was more than he appeared to be; much more. She just hoped the more was enough.

As she watched him standing there, still, silent, distant, steel-like, she wondered if hope formed part of what he was. And if it did she wondered what he hoped for.

She hoped that he did have hope.

She hoped he could do what he always did: win. Defeat the odds.

She hoped he loved Silver enough to want to see him again.

The clouds lifted and he saw where he was.

He screamed. But no one heard him.

There was no one to hear him.

There was no one there.

Clinging to the one shard of hope he had, he reached out as Steel had taught him, and tried to reach his lover.

He couldn’t.

As the clouds closed in again, he closed his eyes and tried to sleep.

There was nothing else to do.

All he could do now was wait.

Wait and hope.

Hope that Steel loved him enough to find him.

That Steel was powerful enough to find him.

He got them back home, to the family, and ignored the questions in her eyes.

Just as he ignored her words of genuine gratitude.

Just as he had always ignored her deep love for him.

They might be back. They might be safe.

But Silver wasn’t.

Silver was still missing.

Silver was probably not safe.

And it was up to Steel to find him.

‘They’ wouldn’t like it.

But ‘They’ didn’t matter.

Not now.

All that mattered was Silver.

Once he had found Silver, once he had brought him back, then he would face the consequences of getting them home.
