Maybe clouds or fog?
Perhaps falling ash, or something to give the feel that the fire is actually destroying part of the environment.
I really like the colors and shading style, especially the background walls.

Then again, I'm a programmer and I don't know anything :^(

Ash is a good idea. There's quite a lot of smoke in there but yeah I was intending fog as a top layer, fog/smoke, and had actually forgotten, thanks!
