This is something I have a hard time with, myself. I get very nervous in public, and rarely talk to people, until the other person who lives in my skull and can't shut up around other people takes over and talks to EVERYONE. Hmmm, that sounded mildly psychotic, but I think you get my meaning.
Anyway, when I'm person number one, I freak out if anyone talks to me, nice or otherwise. I'm just sure that they are stalkers who are going to hurt me or my children, and I just want to get away.
When I'm person number two, I enjoy the random conversations.
And I can't ever predict which way it's going to be, although when my children are with me, I'm far far more likely to be person number 1.
I've not yet had a bad experience with talking to strangers! Well, that's not exactly true, in the Philadelphia airport I did -- I was frantic about almost missing my trans-atlantic flight and people just looked at me like I was crazy and then deliberately took longer. But that's more of a service complaint, I guess, so with just talking to random strangers about random things I've always had good experiences. I don't always do it but I would love to live in a world where it was the norm for everyone. I hate when people avert their eyes rather than make even the small connection of eye contact.
I think the chance of happenings like the moogle-hat definitely outweigh the risk of happenings like the carrot-fundie ;-) Don't let the grumps keep you from the funs!
