Cleanses are kinda gross. You take herbs and/or supplements and/or do a weird liquid-only diet (such as lemon juice and olive oil or a combination of fruit and vegetable juices) for a set amount of time in an attempt to force everything out.

Fasting for religious reasons can be very positive...but it's a slippery slope between that and self destruction. I have a nice schizophrenic patient who used to fast to the point of illness, and protest that he was doing it, not just for himself, but to save the souls of unbelievers. He actually did say that i was one of the people he was trying to save.
Which brings to mind the link between mental illness, brain damage, and religious fanaticism....
I have nothing against religion, spirituality, or fervor. I would describe myself as a ferverent Unitarian Universalist--and, no, that is not an oxymoron. ;) I have fasted for religious reasons, and fasted for self destructive ones, and have found that I cannot fast without the former trying to become the latter.
I actively discourage cleanses. Anything more extreme than going low carb is potentially dangerous. Honestly, where does LJ get these ideas?
