Hindu mythology? There are a ton of interpretations of the Ramayana, including movies, musicals, a graphic novel, and a well-regarded sci-fi book series.

Baba Yaga? I mean, what's cooler than a witch who lives in a house with 3 chicken feet and flies in a mortar and pestle?
