Prologue
White, everything is white and beeps can be heard everywhere. There’s code red[1] and everyone’s in panic. Doctors, nurses, nurse aids, therapists flew out from every room to confirm the code. They see an orange glimmer from above, the rooftop and immediately run back into the rooms to save their patients. All employees of the hospital hurry to save patients, those that are well, those that are in wheelchairs and those that are bedridden. It is their duty to save patients before they save themselves so these heroes hurry to bring the patients out into the ambulances to be taken to a different hospital and as they made sure that all patients are safely out of the building, they hear a small cry.
Everyone looks up and they see a small child at the 6th floor, most health professionals stay frozen but six of them immediately run up to save the kid. They race with time because they know that soon enough, the whole building will be consumed by the fire.
These brave men managed to save the child but they also managed to sustain injuries worse than all of the health professionals. They literally risked their lives to save the child and almost lost theirs. According to talks around the hospital, these six people are the best ones in their respective fields despite being young.
Yamashita Tomohisa, emergency room doctor. Nishikido Ryo, cardiologist and surgeon. Kato Shigeaki, neurologist and neurosurgeon. Koyama Keiichiro, delivery room nurse. Masuda Takahisa, physical therapist. Tegoshi Yuya, neuropsychologist. They all risked their lives for a person and now, they’re the ones lying in hospital beds, comatose.
Chapter 1
Nishikido Ryo is a fighter, if not anything else. Everyone can give witness to that. He used to be a small-town doctor but then he decided that it’s not worth it anymore. He’s not able to apply everything he studied in university and so he went to Tokyo, as much as he hates it, to become a cardiologist there. He was accepted in a university hospital and immediately climbed the ladder and became one of the chief doctors in his field. As to why he chose cardiology remains a mystery even to his closest friends. Everyone praised him, everyone adored him, everyone but a certain neurologist.
Kato Shigeaki is a genius and a dreamer. When he was a child, he dreamt of being a lawyer but due to unpredicted circumstances, he became a doctor instead. It’s not like he doesn’t like being a doctor, it’s more of regret that he didn’t pursue his dream. He’s a neurologist, he deals with people with brain damage and he likes it that way. It’s one of the most complicated fields in medicine and being as he liked challenges, he pursued it. He never regretted studying medicine and now, he also wants to pursue law, study something connected to his job. He got the job offer immediately after the board exam results came out. He’s a top-notcher and jobs came from all over the world. He accepted one in a well-known university hospital and started as one of the best. His colleagues envied him and his superiors adored him.
Yamashita Tomohisa graduated from med school a year after his batch mates graduated. He got held back because he’s a my-pace kind of person and he never regrets it. After getting held-back, he fought harder and graduated with honors, topped the board exam and got accepted in a well-known hospital. But unlike what most of his classmates pursued, he entered the emergency room. He loves action and the emergency room is the best place to witness just that. Among other doctors, he worked the hardest and gave his all to his job. He immediately became one of the best in the emergency room, even other hospitals are asking for him.
Koyama Keiichiro liked helping people and just as expected, he entered the nursing field. Ever since he was a child, he always liked to nurse people back to health, or merely to mother his friends. He knows he can’t be as patient as those medicine students so he took the next best thing, nursing. He’s been best friends with Kato Shigeaki ever the genius moved into the neighbourhood when they were in elementary and even though he’s older than the man, they immediately clicked as best friends and Keiichiro can never be more excited to work with his best friend in the same hospital. Doctor Yamashita finds their friendship cute, Doctor Nishikido just finds it gay. Surprisingly, he passed the nursing board exam with flying color, placing in the top ten. Shigeaki was more than surprised and that night, the best friends celebrated until dawn.
Masuda Takahisa never wanted to be in the medical field, he’s more of a physical person and wanted to be a fire fighter or something. He’s a physical therapist and he helps those with physical injury to be able to return to their normal life. He likes helping people and Takahisa figured he should just do what he wants and at the same time make decent money. He knows he’s physically more than capable so he pursued physical therapy. Unsurprisingly, he became one of the best. He lights up the whole department, including his patients with his sunny smile, never failing in making everyone around him happy and willing to work back to health.
Tegoshi Yuya is a brat, he always gets what he want and he’s used to not working much for it. He always liked getting into people’s brains so he studied psychology but never expected to like it so much. In an instant, the spoiled brat became a man of society, he helped people in the hospital and actually enjoyed his job. He topped the board and became one of the best in the hospital so he never really regrets leaving the safety of his home for the dangers of the outside world.
These six people, six heroes, became friends in an instant despite being in different fields of medicine. They only had one thing in common, their passion to help and heal.
