Translating from arduino c++ to beaglebone python is not as easy as I thought it was going to be.
My brain hurts.

HOWEVER!
I managed to get all the functional hardware required to install a wireless streaming internet radio into the guts of the giant turntable/8-track cabinet, save for figuring out how to capture the no-longer-functional eight-track switches and turn them into the radio interface.
If there's enough room, I may remove one of the plastic instruction panels and replace it with a tft touchscreen and use that as the interface, instead.
I was hanging out with this guy today:

and when I told him about the project he laughed out loud, said I had to get the eight-track player working again because it was "a moral imperative", said he'd send me some brand-new-never-unwrapped eight-track tapes, and mentioned that he'd met both Madman Muntz, who helped design the original four-track version (as well as starting the late-night "I can't afford to sell things this cheaply! I must be craaazy" meme, and designing and selling a 1950's sportscar) and Bill Lear, who headed the consortium that came up with the mechanical aberration called the Super 8 (oh and started the Learjet corporation.) He said they were both complete nuts. He should know.
