US Obesity (from AMA Wire)

What is it about the south that makes people more prone to obesity than elsewhere? There's a stereotype about fried foods, but is it true?  With milder winters than the north and midwest, I would think the lifestyle would make up for the food via year-round activity.

Southerners do eat a lot of fried food,also a lot of beer, biscuits, cornbread etc & are big dessert eaters, but I also think a big part of it is that so much of the time it is blazingly hot & humid- just walking to your mailbox has you pouring sweat (literally). It is very easy to get heatsick from the mildest exertion . Low humidity here is under 70%.
