Actually, ADV's dub of Saiyuki is actually considered one of the best in the industry. I actually don't like the Geneon dub, I feel that what ADV had was amazing.
I've also watched it in Japanese, and there's certainly nothing wrong with the original production, but I don't know - there's just something about the dub.
If you think that the show is good, read the manga. Kazuya Minekura has produced an epic work. And there are several spin offs to the original series. Saiyuki REALOAD (which is the basis of the RELOAD and RELOAD GUNLOCK portions of the anime), there's the Gaiden arc (their time in heaven), and the most recent arc deals with Koumiyou Sanzo. A good chunk of it should be on Manga Fox and Manga Net. TokyoPop has released the first Saiyuki manga through all nine volumes, but is lagging on RELOAD. Needless to say, they haven't even gotten to Gaiden and the Koumiyou Sanzo arc.
If it's the first fifty episodes, it's the ADV dub. Only RELOAD and RELOAD GUNLOCK were done by Geneon because ADV lost the bidding war. (I guess the best way to tell is if you had the whole arc with Homura and company. If you had that arc (more or less spanning the second season, it's the ADV dub.)
What I wouldn't give for the time to watch it all straight through again! I'm still trying to get through all of it (Saiyuki, Reload, and Gunlock, plus the movie) to make sure my disks work.... How many weeks has it been since I got it??
I liked the little atheist kid in the orphanage, too; the title of his book makes me laugh.
Apparently both Saiyuki and Dragon Ball are based on Journey to the West, which was a novel.... (That's why they both have a "Goku" in them!)

I guess when Goku calls Goujo a kappa he's not serious but the resulting banana/cucumber snark was pretty funny.

Rewatching some now because I still can't get around much even just to do things around the house. Might as well, right?
