"Jealousy is being strongly and fearfully protective of something you already have, while envy is feeling malice towards someone because they have something that you wish that you did."

I sometimes wonder if I'm the only person who differentiates between these two words. My alternative to the above explanation is, "Envy is 'I want what she has', jealousy is 'she wants what I have'".

How about: with envy, you wish you had what someone else has; with jealousy, you wish they didn't have it?
