A/N: Ten minute ficlet, coming from the realization that I have a serious obsession with the Hatter's hands.

*dons professor hat and nerd glasses* Now, I'll add this just because I'm a nerd and this piqued my curiosity to do research as to why they choose to do that to his hands in the film:

The phrase 'mad as a hatter' is where the Mad Hatter comes from. Hatters, apparently, went mad because the chemicals they worked with to make felt hats contained mercury, which poisoned them. So, they wanted to make Tarrant out to have been very, very poisoned. According to an interview I saw with Burton and Depp his hands and hair were dyed orange because of the poisoning. Another symptom of mercury poisoning is peeling skin or open sores -- which would explain the bandages. The other signs of mercury poisoning that were seen in the movie were mood swings, memory loss and language confusion. Also, according to Depp, it's why he kept saying, "I've been thinking on things that begin with the letter M" -- he was trying to figure out what drove him mad. The more you know. :D
