This is so brilliantly and strangely realistic absurdity! I love this whole idea--young Hatter & March, naughty schoolboys in the insanity that is Wonderland school. And Hatter's crazy family, and...just wonderful. I love it a LOT.

Sorry your day was bad! I'm glad this helped instead of, you know, making it suck even worse, heh. Thanks for reading!

Augh, I love this. I love the end, especially -- the way you phrased that last paragraph: Life wasn’t about quizzes and exams, schools and maths, getting a giant red A scrawled on your paper. Life was out there, waiting for him to live it. Questions without answers. Answers without questions. Rain without umbrellas.

Good thing he had his hat.

I mean, that's just brilliant. ^_^ The meter rolls really nicely, and it's just so genius in its simplicity. Jealous, jealous me.

(Also, Bill the Lizard! XD Obscure references FTW.)

Heh, you could do a drinking game based on obscure canon references in this fic. I actually went through and counted just now, and ended up with nineteen. Which is... considerably more than I thought I put in there.

And, thanks!

A challenge? Why yes, that DID sound like one! ^_^ k_puff January 13 2010, 06:52:41 UTC
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. Here are ten of the more obscure references, I think -- I don't know what your definition of "obscure" is, but I tried to avoid things that were already referenced in the TV series.

1. Mary Ann - the White Rabbit's maid
2. Dinah, Mary Ann's friend --> Alice's cat
3. The problem's watch was two days wrong, just like Hatter's
4. Distraction, Ambition, Uglification, and Derision were the classes the Mock Turtle took, as well as Reeling and Writhing
5. Hatter getting "suspended" for singing -- nice way of referencing his suspension in time (by Time, no less) for the same offense.
6. Twinkle Twinkle Little Bat was the song Hatter sang and completely butchered at the Queen's concert
7. Edwin and Morcar were referenced in the Rat's incredibly dry monologue.
8. Ms. Mock --> totally the Mock Turtle
9. Ms. Lorry --> the Lorry bird in the Library
10. Knave of Hearts rhyme
*bonus, because I've already mentioned it* Bill the Lizard

Wow, you have the dubious privilege of being as big a geek as I am. *grins* I think the other ones (I went back and wrote them down this time) included mome raths, borogroves, pepper, falling forever (like Alice did at the beginning), Griff (Gryphon), Duck, a reference to Hatter's nickname if he went crazy (Mad Hatter, obviously), and Rabbit's book on law is a reference to his time in the Queen's court room. Also Ms. Lorry was a mistake, I had her in there as the teacher and decided at the last minute it should of course be Mock, what with all the school references. I just missed that time when I went through to change it. (I know I know, and I call myself a beta!) But I had the branches of math and the "reeling and writhing" listed as two, which means you got them all. YAY! DUBIOUS PRIVILEGES FTW!

I enjoyed this quite a bit. I like that it was before things turned dark between the two of them. I do love the possibilities of the in between time.
