The percentage who are mean, dishonest and unethical is probably pretty much the same as that of religious people who are mean

I think, in some cases, the idea that is true is what scares the 'oh noes an atheist!' crowd. They really think the only thing between themselves and completely going kitten-eating puppy-kicking wild is their religion.

And that just weirds me out.

There's experimental evidence that religious authoritarians may be less ethical than non-religious folk. The former are more inclined to adopt whatever argument supports their position, whereas the latter are more likely to hew to their principles even when it doesn't favor them.
