I'm so jealous of your wood-burning stove, but we have no room at all in the yard to store wood.
What I have done, however is buy another expensive modern paraffin stove for the living room to supplement the calor gas stove in the hall and the other paraffin stove I bought last year on the first floor landing. We had to use the upstairs one yesterday because it was so cold. There's very little smell except when it starts up and turns off, but I'd rather be warm than worry about that.
One of those big recyclable shopping bag things the supermarkets push on you is a godsend if you burn wood. Fold it up and take it with you any time you're out and about. Any scrap wood in skips, lying at the side of the road etc. just pop it in the bag and take it home.
Another good source of burnables is old broken pallets. Any business working with palleted goods tends to have a pile of damaged pallets out back which they can't get rid of. Try asking around.
