Nov 2 2010 Gubernatorial Election -- 1st time Inspector (in charge)! [LONG!]

As I previously mentioned, on Tuesday Nov. 2, I worked as a Pollworker for my 4th time, and for my first time I was an Inspector. This meant I was in charge of my Precinct: go to training, pick up supplies, set up voting, make voting work, teardown & accounting, drop off materials. The two Chief Judges (my job) take care of machine setup, printing the initial zero count reports (that show no votes cast on the machines), doing all the chain-of-custody stuff involving the security of the memory cards, including placement of tamper tape over the locks and checking the machines frequently throughout the day to insure the tamper tape remains undamaged (or noted in the poll book and replaced if anybody tampers with it). At the end of the day we print out machine reports from every machine, post them for the canvassers to look at, break the tapes, remove the PCMCIA cards, secure the cards in a locked clear plastic bag, write up a half dozen different reports, and then take everything downtown to turn in like you. We also run the show, jump in as unit judge or book judge as necessary to give people breaks, review (and usually approve) requests for provisional ballots, help people who are lost, deal with hostile assholes, keep the electioneers 100 feet away from the door (and civil toward one another), call in hourly ( ... )

You noted the physical demands of the job. I'm familiar with them too. I do have to pick up all the stuff except for the EDMs on the day before election day and get it out to the school. Fortunately I'm able to stash it all in the custodian's closet under lock and key there, so it's available when I go in at 5:15 the next morning to set up the EDMs ( ... )
