He was alone, had been for hours; it was just his luck that someone had to find him now, especially him of all people.

“It a nice sunset and all, Shikamaru, but I don’t think your wife is going to be all that happy if you miss dinner.” The voice then said lightly, knowingly, “Or if you come home smelling like smoke.”

Nara Shikamaru snorted but still dropped the cigarette, taking a moment to snuff it out with the heel of his shoe, and then stuffed his hands into his pants pockets. He wore his old jounin outfit instead of his usual ANBU gear, having long since been promoted, and there was stubble along his jaw from indecision of whether to grow a beard or not. He was only twenty three but his face wore his years as if he’d lived a hundred, making him look older. That wasn’t uncommon though among shinobi; they often lost their innocence early on in life.

“So what brings you here?”

The blond shrugged. “Just taking a stroll; I thought it might be nice to watch the sunset.”

“You’re going to have to do that paper work eventually you know?”

Uzumaki Naruto laughed, a hand going to scratch the back of his head. “Haha, aa, you caught me.” Naruto was wearing his Jounin gear as well, the only difference being the white Hokage coat he wore over top it.

Casting his friend a side-long glance, Shikamaru continued. “Also, I head that the Council gave your new aid Haruno’s number.” A light smile touched his lips as Naruto paled suddenly and laughed nervously again. “In case of an emergency or something, I think it was said, but that’s just what I heard.”

“Oh, ah ha, is th-that so? Haha, well then it’s a good thing Sakura-chan doesn’t get back from her mission until next week.”

A sudden ‘boom’ sounded through-out the village and Naruto stumbled as the ground shook. “NA-RU-TO!”

Shikamaru laughed this time and patted Naruto on the back, nearly knocking the shell-shocked man over.

“If you had done your paper work, Rokudaime-sama, you would have known she finished her mission early and has been back since this morning.” With that, the genius waved as he began walking away.

“Aaa, maybe,” Naruto laughed, but with his next words his voice turned serious. “But you know, Shikamaru, for a smart guy, you can be pretty stupid sometimes. While you’re out here being depressed and brooding, taking a page from Sasuke’s book, which we’ve all learned is never a good idea, you’ve left your pregnant wife at home, alone and by herself. You might not need to be with anyone during the anniversary of his death, but what about her?”

Shikamaru paused. “Aaa, right. Thanks, Hokage-sama.” Then he was gone in a swirl of smoke.

Naruto smiled, which soon degenerated into a grimace as he remembered one pissed-off former team mate and turned to start running, but then the wind shifted slightly behind him and warm breath ghosted across his neck causing his entire body to shut down in fear.

Haruno Sakura beamed. “Going somewhere, Na-ru-to-kun?”
