“Takegami-san, here is the item that you ordered.” The young girl held out the fabric and Yuri eyed it with serious eyes. It was a dark green fabric with brocade, it was supposed to be made into a floor-length dress along with the shiny metallic-black fabric laying in front of her on the table.
“That is just the one I need. You can put it on the table over there.” Yuri nodded to the table to her right and then went back to her work, totally missing the annoyed look that the young assistant gave her when she walked out of the room. The designer hadn't even said thank you!
Yuri sighed and sat down on the chair next to her desk, she was so tired and the thoughts kept spinning round and round in her head. She just wanted to go home, lay down on the couch, listen to that new CD of classical piano music with a bucket of chocolate-cola ice cream and a huge glass of orange-juice....
“Takegami-san. Someone to see you.” The door was opened and closed, the assistant not even bothering to enter the room anymore seeing as her boss obviously didn't appreciate the work that she was doing.
Yuri sighed softly but remained in the chair for a few seconds before she actually stood up to walk out of the room and into her real office that was door-to-door with her workplace. She was no longer feeling like having ice cream, she felt sick and was not in any mood to greet any unannounced company but never the less she walked into the office and was surprised when she recognized the tall man sitting in one of the armchairs waiting for her.
“Long time no see, Yuri.” The man stood up with the hint of a smile on his face, the sunglasses still covering his eyes. “How are you?” He walked up to her and gave her a quick hug before placing himself back in the chair again.
“It sure has been a while, Gackt-kun. I'm pretty good, shouldn't complain.” She smiled for the first time that day, it had been a long time since she last saw him and although she was usually very strict about not hanging out with the company's clients, her bosses never liked it when she did, Gackt had been very easy to work with and she had been getting along very nicely with him to the point where she would have considered them to be friends.
“That's good, that's really good.” The famous musician took off his glasses and placed them in his coat-pocket. “You don't happen to have any coffee laying around to no good use?” He smiled and the look of it was enough to make Yuri all warm inside. There was truly something special about this man after all.
“Of course.” Yuri opened the door to her assistant's room and told her to bring in some coffee before walking back to her guest and sat down in the chair facing him. “So how have you been? I heard your new CD has hit the top-lists again.” She slowly fingered the ring on her thumb as she spoke, she didn't know why but she always felt a little nervous when the man was looking at her with those blue eyes.
“Yeah, these past few months have been really great.” He nodded as a thanks to Yuri's assistant who had brought him his coffee but then turned all his attention back to Yuri. “So...” He took a sip from the black coffee and looked up at her with serious eyes. “I actually have a reason for dropping by today.” Another sip.
Yuri looked at him without saying anything, she knew he didn't like to be interrupted when he spoke so she waited for him to continue, even if her patience wasn't the best that day.
“A little bird told me that you were thinking of leaving this company and start your own designer-label.” He stopped and looked at her with eyes that told the girl to start speaking again.
“Really? And might that little bird have been someone who works as a reporter?” She asked with a smile and a raised eyebrow.
“Maybe.” He answered her smile and continued. “So is it true? Are you starting your own business?”
Yuri looked at him for a few seconds, not really sure what to answer. Sure she had thought about it more than once but she needed money to do that and there was no way that she had that kind of money and she was not about to borrow it from Koki, she wasn't that desperate.
“I don't know.” She sighed and leaned back in the chair. “There is just so much going on right now and to tell you the truth I don't really fit in here. I mean, you've seen the designs that these people create. They're crazy! I can't understand how I ended up here in the first place.” She smiled a tired smile, truthfully right now she didn't even want a job. She wanted to be home, home where she felt safe and loved. Home with Koki...
“Because I'm looking for a designer who can spend all of her time on my kind of fashion but the thing is that the person I want for that job is already taken by this lousy company that doesn't even realize her potential.” Yuri didn't really know what he was hinting at but she kept on listening. “So I was thinking that if she was looking to start something of her own I would like to be a sponsor and a face for those designs.” He felt like he was about to burst open from the suspension and from the funny look on the girl's face but he still played his part well as he managed to keep that calm face that Yuri always found so fascinating.
“W... What are you talking about?” She was almost afraid to ask but she still smiled as she did.
“I'm asking you if you want to help me make a new designer-label, your talent and my face would make it more successful than any other label out there.”
“Are you sure about this? Do you realize how much money that it's going to cost you? How much time it's would take? We have a space that needs to be found, fabrics to be bought, new designs that needs sketching, advertising that needs to be made public...” Yuri felt how her head was starting to spin again so she took a deep breath to calm herself down.
“I'm completely sure. The place is already taken care of, you can move your entire office there today if you'd like, the advertising would be handled by my agency so there is nothing to worry about there, the fabrics can be bought and delivered by tomorrow if you want. And about your sketches, I have seen the ones that this company refused to make a reality. They are magnificent, classic yet new and tasteful. You are a genius in the making, Yuri, and I would be honored to help your dream come true.”
He leaned back and observed her in silence. He knew that she wasn't comfortable working as she did now, cooped up in that tiny office all day, more like a slave than a designer.
“I... I don't really know... It's a really big decision to make just over coffee.”
“Then how about you think about it over dinner tonight?” Gackt looked at her with a kind face that made her all warm inside. “Well, actually there was something else I wanted to talk to you about.”
“What is that?” She asked, her face still a little warm from his dinner-invite that she hadn't had any time to answer.
“You see, I'm on my way to a photoshoot but it appears that the model that I'm supposed to do it with has taken an unexpected vacation so I'm currently without a partner.” He took a sip from his coffee again, it was lukewarm by now and with a frown he placed the cup back on the table. “And then I thought of you.”
“Me? What do you mean?”
“To be truly honest you're a beautiful girl, no one in their right mind can deny that.” Yuri blushed a little but she didn't break eye-contact. “I think you would make a great model, even if it's just for today so that's why I'm asking you to come join me at the photoshoot. There is no one I would rather work with than you and if you agree to do me this one favor I promise I will take you to dinner tonight.”
Yuri didn't really know what to say, she had never thought of the idea of her being a model. Sure she didn't look too bad but it had never crossed her mind... Not until now anyways.
“Are you sure that you want me? I mean I have never modeled before in my life.”
“You'll do fine, I'll be there the whole time and we have one of the best photographers today so he will tell you what to do.” The girl didn't know why but there was something about this man's smile that just made her unable to decline.
“O... Okay, if you really want me to then I suppose I can take the last hour off from work.” She smiled at the happy face that he was making but when he was about to thank her she stopped him. “But I still haven't decided on your other offer so don't get too excited just yet.”
She stood up, grabbed her jacket and her purse before walking out of her cramped office with Gackt, telling her grumpy assistant that she was going to leave early while she sent a mail to Koki saying that she might be late, not that he would probably have noticed anyway since he was going to work late once again.

“Beautiful.” Gackt commented when she stepped out of the dressingroom an hour later. She was wearing a thin, white floor-length dress, her dark hair had been curled and was falling beautifully over her bare back and the spring-looking make-up made her look even more beautiful than before.
“Really?” She asked as she walked up to him, she felt like she was floating. She was that happy.
“Like an angel.” He smiled at her and took her hand to guide her to the set.
“Thank you.” She blushed a little as he held her small hand in his. “I wish I could say the same about you.” She giggled a little.
He was dressed in a gorgeous creation of blood-red and black silk and leather and looking at him closely he kind of looked like a devil,creating a very nice contrast to her appearance.
“Well, the theme is angels and demons so I'll take that as a compliment.” He opened the door for her before walking onto the set himself.
“Well, you should seeing as I meant it that way.” Yuri placed a hand on his shoulder and smiled. She didn't know why but suddenly she wasn't feeling concerned about her work, she wasn't confused about what to think about the baby. She just felt happy and right now that was good enough for her, she knew she had to go back to all those worries later so she was going to enjoy this as much as she possibly could.

“Otsukare sama deshita.” Gackt nodded in response to the make-up artist that passed him outside the dressingroom after the shoot had finished. They had been there for the past three hours, the photographer had been ecstatic about working with Yuri who turned out to be a fabulous model, she did as she was told by the photographer and even though she was a little tense in the beginning she soon relaxed and started posing in ways that felt natural for her and to say that it had looked good would have been a major understatement.
“Yuri?” He knocked on the door but since there was no answer he assumed that she wasn't there and decided to go inside and wait for her there but as he opened the door a sight met him that he wasn't going to forget that easily.
She was standing there, back towards him, wearing nothing but a black silk-bra and the pair of dark jeans from before but it wasn't the fact that she was standing in front of him wearing practically nothing on her upperbody that upset him. It was the scars on her back.
The three long scars running across her back that almost glistened in the light from the bright lamps in the dressingroom.
“Gackt?” Yuri turned her head towards him with a raised eyebrow. She had completely forgotten about being partially naked in front of the older man and was just looking at him, wondering why there was such a sad look in his eyes.
But he said nothing, just approached her and softly ran his fingers along one of the scars causing Yuri to shiver slightly.
“How did you get these?” His voice was nothing but a whisper but there was so much hurt and anger in it Yuri couldn't ignore it.
“It's nothing, they're all healed anyways.” Her voice was calm but her hands still fumbled with the shirt in her hands, she didn't really like talking about those scars. It had been hard enough for her letting Koki see them every night when they went to sleep and now for Gackt to see them was more than she thought she could handle.
“Okay...” He sighed as he tiredly rubbed his stiff neck, finally letting his hands leave her body. “I'll wait outside, I'll take you to dinner when you're done. And don't you dare turn that offer down.” Yuri assumed that it was supposed to have been a joke but there was something about the whole situation that told her that she really shouldn't try her luck by refusing his dinner invitation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You really didn't have to do this.” Yuri looked down at the great looking dinner in front of her and she felt a little embarrassed thinking about how the man across the table paid for the entire dinner.
“Don't worry about it, no matter how good you be at what you do I still make he most money so it's still my treat.” Gackt blinked at her with a smile and motioned for her to eat before digging in himself.
“Thank you.” Yuri felt that stupid blush creep onto her face again and she stared down at her food when she saw how the man across the table chuckled as he saw the blush.
What was it about this man that made her blush even though she almost never blushed, hardly even around Koki.
“So...” Gackt took another sip from his glass of red wine and looked back at Yuri with calm eyes. “Would you tell me about the scars or am I just going to have to guess?” Yuri glanced up from her meal with worried eyes.
“Do I really have to?” She knew she sounded like a child but there was nothing she could do about it, she hated those scars but more than anything she hated the man who had made them.
Gackt didn't answer but the look he gave her was more than enough answer and with a sigh Yuri leaned back in the chair and told him the entire story.
“When I was 17 I met this guy... I know it's such an old story but still. His name was Haruo and the first couple of weeks it was really great but in some strange way... He scared me. It wasn't like I didn't notice that he had a temper but I just thought that was it, that he would never act on it....” Yuri fell silent, her shoulders were shaking somewhat and she could feel a tear run down her face.
“But from the looks of it I assume he did.” He reached her a handkerchief and she wiped the tear away before taking another deep breath.
“Yeah. It started about two months after we started dating, at first it was just occasional jealousy. He would get upset if I spent my days without him, he'd get angry if I didn't let him know where I was. But then he started getting physical, he could grab me and drag me all the way home to his place if he saw me out on the street with a friend. If I did something to piss him off he would throw me down and...” She stopped, she just couldn't continue on that subject and Gackt didn't press the matter as he saw how badly she reacted to opening up about it in the first place.
“Anyways...” She chuckled but there was no joy in it, just plain sadness. “That's when I decided to leave, I wasn't going to have my life destroyed just because I was frightened. For about a year I stayed single and he would call once in a while but never made any other contact with me. Then on my 18th birthday I met... this other guy.” Yuri bit her lip as she mentally cursed herself for almost mentioning Koki's name but Gackt didn't ask for his name so no harm, no foul.
“After that Haruo never called again and I started dating this other guy, but then after a few months Haruo started looking for me. He would come looking for me at school, he'd constantly stay outside my house the whole night and follow for me when I went to school but since my older brother was working in the same area as my high school he would come with me and then walk me home after school. But one day he didn't come and so I decided to walk home alone...”
Another deep breath from Yuri and another sip of wine from Gackt.
“Turns out he was waiting for me not too far from the school. He attacked me from behind, knocked me to the ground in the process and no matter how much I tried I couldn't get him off of me. He was pretty much sitting on top of me, his laugh was so cold and horrible I still wake up sometimes in the middle of the night with his laughter still ringing in my ears.... He had a knife with him and well, you saw my back for yourself so you can probably guess what he did after that.”
The silence fell over their table again as Yuri drank her water with such deadly calm it scared even Gackt. The lit candles made her pale face look like that of a corpse and her entire body was stiff as she placed the glass on the table again and looked into his eyes again.
“After that my boyfriend made sure I got a restraining order against him and it wasn't until last year that he appeared again. I was walking home from work and before I knew it he was standing there in front of me, saying how much he loved me, he hugged me and kissed me as he told me how much he had missed me and how we would be together again.” She broke eye contact and leaned back in the chair with a small, tired smile.
“I don't really remember much after that. Just that I woke up in the hospital the next day with bruises and cuts all over my body and according to my boyfriend I had showed up at home crying hysterically, shaking out of control and as a result of that panic attack I had fainted and then I had been brought to the hospital. After that I haven't seen Haruo but I can only assume that my boyfriend did something to him, I haven't asked him about it though seeing as he would never admit doing something like that.” Yuri smiled at the thought of Koki protecting her and this time it was a genuine smile.
“You really love this boyfriend of yours, don't you?” Gackt chuckled when he saw the smile on her face.
“Yes. I really do.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Where the hell have you been?! Do you have any idea how worried I was when you didn't come home and I called your office only to find out that you'd left early?!” Yuri stood there in the hall, completely dumbfounded as to what was happening.
She hadn't even stepped through the door before Koki had started yelling at her for not coming home when she was supposed to.
“What are you talking about? I sent you a message saying that I would be late...”
“No, you didn't! I got no message and I've tried to call you ten times already, what kind of idiot turns off her phone when she's pregnant and not letting her boyfriend know that she's late?” Koki ran a hand through his hair, he was frustrated not to mention angry, Yuri could tell and even though she was not about to let him get away with calling her an idiot she didn't want to argue with him.
“Look, you're obviously in a bad mood but I did send you a message, I promise. And besides, the reason for turning off my cell was that I met up with a friend, he needed help with something and after we were done he asked me out to dinner and I just couldn't refuse him.” Yuri walked up to Koki and pulled him close before placing a soft kiss on his lips. She was too tired to fight and she just hoped that he was as well so that they could just go to sleep.
“So you went out to dinner with some 'friend' while I was sitting at home worried sick about you?” He pulled away from her and the look in his eyes told Yuri that he wasn't about to let it go.
“Look, how many times do I have to tell you? I sent you a mail saying that I would be late, and besides it's not like you let me know when you're going to be late!” She felt how her heart sped up and the anger rose to her face, turning it into a reddish color. Why couldn't he just let it go?
“This is not about me, Yuri. This is about our baby. I came home early today because I thought that you would be waiting for me but it turns out that you were out in the middle of the night having dinner with someone who's name you haven't even mentioned!” He was screaming at her now and for every word he uttered Yuri felt the panic rise in her chest, he never screamed at her, he knew what that did to her but it seemed like he no longer cared about that.
“Stop...” She whispered but Koki didn't listen, he just kept on screaming how stupid she was for ignoring his calls, for turning off her cellphone... “Koki, please stop.” She breathed as the loud thumping in her ears grew louder and louder.
She stumbled past her still screaming boyfriend, into the bathroom. She quickly locked the door before sliding down onto the floor with her back against it, covering her ears to block out the angry voice on the other side of the door as the tears trickled down her face.
“Please just make him go away...” She didn't know what else she wanted but silence... She wanted them to go back to what they had before she got pregnant, she wanted the “normal” Koki back. The one that didn't lose his temper that easily....
“You know what? I don't need to deal with this right now.” The angry screaming on the other side of the door had reduced to nothing but an annoyed voice and somehow it hurt Yuri even more than the screaming had. The sound of keys jingling and the rustle of fabric reached her ears and just after that the loud sound of the door slamming shut made her flinch.
She was alone. She could feel it even though she was still inside the locked bathroom, she could feel the emptiness surrounding her and the dark room seemed to be closing in on her.
“I really did send it to you, Koki... Please trust me...” The tears started running down her cheeks, she tried to stop them but there was nothing she could do.
All she could do was to just sit there in the dark, feeling how her entire body turned colder and colder as she tried to stay awake. No strength to get up and unlock the door to go to bed, no will in her saying to her to think about herself and the baby in her stomach. No one to support her.... No one to love her....
