We are planning to buy a Tesla Model S. This is so far out of my usual car-buying habit that I feel a need to justify it

Granting that you've already made your decision, have you ever looked at a Chevy Volt? I bought one last year and I love it.

I rejected it because of range anxiety. Note that I'm not claiming I was correct to do so.

Range anxiety? The Volt is a plug-in hybrid. When you run out of battery power it just rolls over to the gas engine. I commute every day on electricity but if I need to travel farther I just put gas in it and keep going like a conventional automobile.

I'd love to get a Tesla, but our Prius is only 3 years old, and I don't think Chris and I can justify having two cars given that we both ride bicycles to work most days. But I think the Tesla is really cool and I do love the idea of driving something that isn't trashing the environment. I hope you guys manage to make your road trips work with it.
