I suspect the end with the guard was just a little nod to the whole horror-movie genre--though they didn't go all the way and have the dummy come back to life to attack him. Because Sam and Dean are mostly competent, after all.
Yeah, agreed with comment above, the ending was a nod to the old school horror movie trope of that one last scare... that last bit at the end where you find out SURPRISE!! The monster/killer/evil clown/whatever isn't really dead after all :P The whole thing was a tribute to 80s horror flicks, so that's why they did that. ;)
