Actually watched the ep a little earlier tonight, so this review is getting posted earlier than normal, too.
So we pick up right where we left off last week....with Mary trying to explain her actions to the boys. They're both having a rough time understanding why she would work with the BMOL....and lie to them about it - since the lake house, they find out. Dean's not happy that Cas almost died and Wally did, all because of her deception.
We then pick up the action 3 days later as Mary & Mr. Ketch drive a van into a secure facility. They just came from a job, using one of the BMOL toys thanks to the AVD - Whatever that is. Where do they get these devices from anyway???
Oh....it's a BMOL facility! Where Ketch passes off his bag to a gal w/three PHDs to clean his gun or whatever. Heh. He doesn't care.
Looks like Mary has her own little room - cold and impersonal as the hallways. She's been trying to text Dean to talk things out and he clearly isn't talking to her.
We flashback to their discussion at the Bunker. She says she's doing this for them, that she's trying to catch up. Dean smartly brings up that she's been gone their whole lives and suddenly she's back but she needed space....so they gave it to her. But of course she needed space from them. He's got a point.
Dean: How about once, you just try and be a mom!
Mary: I am your mother, but I am not just a mom. And you are not a child.
Dean: I never was, so between us and them.
Mary: It's not like that.
Dean: Yeah, Mary it is. And you made your choice. So there's the door.
Ouch. And Sam tells her she should go. :(
Great, great acting here from Jensen. Wow.
So the BMOL facility is made up of metal containers....shipping containers. Interesting.
Ketch reports the successful hunt to Mick, who asks about her and then the boys. Ketch says they've already got the "best Winchester" and they don't need Sam & Dean. Oooooh, them are fightin' words, Arthur! >:[
Mick reminds him it's not his call....the old men want the boys involved 'cause if they are, the other American hunters will follow.
Dean's found them a case, dead body in Akron w/the throat ripped out. Sounds like Dean hasn't been talking to Sam either??? Sam points out it's a drug dealer who had his throat slit. It's not a case. Dean needs to hit something...now.
Of course, Sam wants to talk about mom....he's pissed and hurt and confused, too, but he thinks they should talk to her. He figures she must have had a good reason for her actions. She's family and they owe her the benefit of the doubt. Ok, Sam doesn't totally say this, but he was headed in that direction. Goodness knows the two of them have lied to one another in the past....because they thought it was the best thing. Don't they owe it to their mom to hear her out on what she's done?
But Dean's had enough and he heads out for drinks. :(
He accuses Sam of always playing the peacemaker and for once he should pick a side. *sigh*
So Sam checks his phone and there's 6 messages from Mary, the last one saying it's urgent that they talk.
Looks like Sam picked his side...
He drives up to the facility, Mary waiting outside the gate. Look at all that snow! :)
Mary admits she screwed up, but she's working with the BMOL on a future with no more monsters, where Sam could have a different future.
"I'm not trying to recruit you, but you need to know, things are changing. Please, just let me show you."
She takes Sam to the control room and Mick is there. Sam makes a point of not shaking his hand and is ready to leave when Mick mentions they're about to have a briefing on how they're going to eliminate every vampire in America.
Hee! Dean giving the "Lucy!" but he didn't get to finish the "I'm home!" Darn it.
He finds Sam's brief note about going out and is disappointed to not find much booze in the Bunker. Then there's a pounding on the door....
The briefing is about to start, but Ketch isn't to be found. Mick says they'll start without him.
'Cause he's at the Bunker door! The location is no secret because of course, it's a MOL bunker. Yeah, but your telling me he didn't have a key? Toni did! But he's on a diplomacy run, so I get it. He's even brought some high grade scotch. Love Jensen working all the dark and glarey eyes from Dean here. Whoo-hoo! Those are going to make for some deadly caps! :D
So they've already got one American hunter there....
Sam refuses to sit down at the table like Mary is. You go Sam!
So they've killed all but one 11 vampire cell in the Mid-West Region of the US. Sam wants to know how.
They've studied how the vampires work and live and how they're all linked to the Alpha Vampire. They trade amongst themselves - info. and victims. The BMOL then find a group, send a team and wipe them all out.
Ah, AVD = Anti-Vamp Device.
They've got the motel where the last Mid-West cell is living. They go in tomorrow and wipe them out, then move on to the rest of the US.
So we see vampire gal who is reporting to vampire dude that her whole nest is gone. He offers her fresh human blood to drink & says this motel is a fortress, she'll be safe here. Nobody gets in or out without him knowing.
Hello, Alpha Vamp!!!!! :)
So much for it being impenetrable. :P
Back at the Bunker, Dean and Ketch are enjoying the scotch.
Dean's not one for small talk and he knows Ketch is there to recruit them.
Ketch says it's not his idea, but the old men have other ideas.
Dean brings up Toni and Ketch admits he knew about her neurotic behavior before - they used to date. o.O
Mr. Ketch: You're a killer, Dean Winchester. And so am I. And if we go too long without something to track or trap or punch or gut. Well, things get a bit ugly, don't they? The Men of Letters keep me busy. They point me in a direction and 'bang' off to the races. It's not a bad life.
Then he happens to mention that he's got vamps to kill and that gets Dean's interest.
So the other hunter knew Rufus....they worked a case, once.
Sam brings this up to Mick who admits they've failed to recruit the top-tier US hunters yet....like Sam.
Well, hell....Ketch leads Dean & the Impala right to the vampire motel.
Meanwhile Mick is texting Ketch and asking where he is. Uh, oh....
Ketch tells Dean it'll be 2 against 10 inside. Uh....I thought it was 11. But then Ketch did miss the briefing.
I don't like this.....are they going to get trapped in there and Mary & Sam and the BMOL will have to bail them out???
The place seems empty...
Sam admits to Mary that if this wasn't a sales pitch it was a damned good one.
Oh, crap. No, it's gonna be the other way around. The BMOL is getting attacked by the vamps, isn't it???
Ketch found the gal vamp from earlier hiding in the basement. Otherwise the place is empty.
Ketch proceeds to start hitting the gal when she doesn't open up about where everyone is. Dean finally stops him and takes over the interrogation - calmly asking, telling her he'll make her death quick. She says they're out hunting....the hunters. I knew it!!!!!
Yep, Sam and the others see on the monitors that the vamps are at the gate!
The Vamps are getting in and Sam says lock the place down. Even Mary is giving orders while Mick is oddly silent.
Sam & Mary go right to where the vamps are getting in while the rest get secured behind locked doors. Mary kills one vamp and Sam just knocks out the other one. Then they go outside briefly to see 2 more trying to get inside before Sam secureds the door. Mary's about to behead the waking-up vamp, but Sam stops her.
They all gather in the control room with the vamp and Mick wants to know how they even knew who they were. Vamp says their father told them. The Alpha. The BMOL gal says that's impossible, 'cause he's been in Morocco for the past decade, but Sam says that's not true 'cause he last saw him 5 years ago. Ha! So much for BMOL intelligence!
Mary then lops off the vamps head when he tells them they're all dead.
Of course, when Sam asks if anyone in the room has experience killing anything, the only hand that goes up is the other hunter dude. They put all their weapons on the table and it's not enough. The AVD is in the armory. It won't be enough to kill the Alpha.
Then Mick and Mary share a look and she asks, "Where is it?" The Colt!!!!!!!!
Sam is visibly emotional at coming face to face with the Colt again. Great work from Jared here!
Mary comes clean about how she got it, stealing it from Ramiel. Mick says it doesn't work though....no bullets. Uh......
But Sam remembers how to make new ones from Bobby! Wow....Sam's memory is pretty impressive. He gives the instructions to Mick and then he Mary & hunter dude head off to the armory.
Geez, they just leave Sam to handle 2 vamps??? With no back-up?
They get the AVD and...Mick's doing the spell for the bullets.
Meanwhile Ketch and Dean are on their way....
It's hunter dude at the door, alone. Uh, oh....and he brought a friend. Alpha Vamp!!!!!!
He kills the 2 other BMOL. Oh, boy. Where's Mary?????
Oh....hunter dude's been working for the Alpha Vamp, keeping him safe in exchange for money. Mick looks pretty scared here....as you would faced with the Alpha.....'cause he's pissed.
Alpha Vampire: I'm old. I like living quietly. You've been making my life awfully noisy lately. You've killed so many of my children. I've seen your work... in England. I didn't get involved, because, well it's England. But America. Yes. America is my home. And it is time that you. Get. Off. My lawn!
Sam finds an unconscious Mary in the armory. Pierce (hunter dude) knocked her out and squashed the AVD (really? you can just squish it? not very durable) and radioed the Alpha it was all clear.
The Alpha wants to kill Mick on a live feed back to the BMOL headquarters in England. Ooooh.
Then Sam & Mary sneak in and Sam grabs the Colt. But it's not loaded, Sam!!!!!
Mick shows Mary a bullet...
Alpha Vampire: That gun can't save all of you.
Sam: Who said I was here to save all of us. My family and I we kill vamps when they get out of line, and you let us.
Alpha Vampire: I have many children, Sam. What's one, two here or there?
Sam: Exactly. So, let my Mom and me go. We'll walk away, go back to the way things were. The way things are supposed to be. Hunters and vampires. Cops and robbers a fair fight.
The Alpha then asks about Mick and Sam says he can have him. Hee!
Mick goes flying at Sam, Mary gets thrown across the table by the Alpha and....Did Mick just give Sam a bullet? 'Cause that would be the smart thing to do...
Yes!!!!!! I knew it!
Buh, bye Alpha Vamp.
Okay, the shot of the Colt firing was pretty cool, 'cept that the bullet just appears in mid-air below the muzzle of the gun. What???? But the shot of Sam through the hole in the Alpha's head? Now that was cool! :D
Ok, so Dean and Ketch missed the whole thing???
Yep, 'cause we next see Ketch & Mick talking w/Sam, Dean, Mary, & the Impala in the background. Mick wants to know where Ketch was - following orders. He was recruiting Dean when Mick's plan went sideways. He's pretty calm about their lost comrades.
Dean says he was with Ketch when they heard about the attack and came running. He didn't know Sam was there so.....yeah, it was all about Mary being in danger.
Dean: When I thought something might have happened to you, nothing else mattered.
Mary: Dean, the things I said-
Dean: Mom, you were... It's not your job to make my lunch or kiss me goodnight. We're adults. You're gonna make your own choices, even if I don't like them. Even if I really, really don't like them. It's just something I'm gonna have to get used to. Okay, Mom?
Mary: Okay.\
Awwww, and there we are. Family again! Group hug!!!! No? *pouts*
Then Ketch brings out Pierce, in chains, saying they have ways of dealing with hunters who go rogue. "They aren't pleasant." And Sam and Mary both say "good". Yikes. :(
So Sam tells Mick he's in with joining the BMOL. Uh, oh...
What about Dean? Sam says to give him time. Oh, boy....I don't like this!
Final Thoughts:
Okay, this was a pretty good episode. Lots of action and it was paced really well. There was always something interesting going on. Great acting from the boys, too. :)
So in the end, Dean forgives Mary and accepts that he's an adult now and he's not always going to agree with her choices. Good for you, Dean! So maybe now you won't be giving the silent treatment to the next person who does something wrong in your eyes??? I love you, dude, but you said Sam's always playing peacemaker? Well, you're always not discussing things and going out for drinks instead. That's always your MO when there's a conflict! *sigh*
As I mentioned in the notes, I saw and understood where everyone was coming from. Mary thinks she's doing the right thing for the future of the country and namely, for her boys. Can't blame her for that. Dean's right that Mary needed space from her sons, which was pretty hurtful. And Sam was right that Mary deserved to be heard out on her motives. In the end, it all worked out but...
Yep, there's a but.
Mary's on board with the BMOL and now so is Sam. But how are they going to get Dean to join up? And what will the consequences be? I still don't trust these British bastards. Sure, they got a wake-up call with this attack on their facility, but I don't think it's going to change their main goal of American hunter recruitment. And just what do they do to rogue hunters? Doesn't sound good. What if Sam, Dean, or Mary step out of line down the road???? I don't think the others are just going to let the BMOL do what they want. This can't be headed to a good place. :(
Part of me want Dean to remain separate from the whole BMOL stuff....'cause his instincts are usually pretty darned good. If he doesn't trust someone there's usually a very good reason and it's proven correct. But then, if that drives a wedge between him and Sam....yeah, that won't be good. *sigh* I'm torn.
So again, we're forced to wait and see where this is all leading. We still don't know what the BMOL are really all about except what we've been shown. Can we trust it? Are they really the benevolent helpers to American hunters as they portray themselves? Or is there something more sinister to be revealed down the road? I suspect the latter. It's just my suspicious nature. ;)
Random thought: So there were only Mick, the 2 brainy people, Pierce, and the guard outside of that facility? Just who has been going on all those vampire nest raids to wipe them out??? Just Ketch and Mary? Shouldn't there have been more people in that place?
Alright, where's next Thursday already?
Quotes:
Dean: You were running an errand for the Brits? You kept it from us. Cas almost died.
Sam: A hunter got killed.
Mary: You think I don't know? I'm the one who burned his body, I'm the one who told his wife. I watch him die every night.
Dean: Good.
Mary: I'm doing this for you. I'm playing three decades of catch up here.
Dean: And we're not? How do you think this has been for us? We're your sons, and you've been gone. Our whole lives, you've been gone! You said that you need time. No, you said you needed space. So we gave you your space. But you didn't need just space. No, you needed space from us.
Mary: That's not true. Dean, I'm trying-
Dean: How about for once you just try and be a mom.
Mary: I am your Mother. But I am not just a mom, and you are not a child.
Dean: I never was. So, between us and them-
Mary: It's not like that.
Dean: Yeah, Mary it is. And you made your choice. So there's the door.
Dean: You know what screw it. I need a drink. No I need drinks, plural. And this whole peace maker shtick that you've been running. First with Cas, now with Mom. It's getting old, man.
Sam: What is that supposed to mean?
Dean: You're always playing the middle, Sam. For once, why don't you pick a side.
Sam: Yeah. Um, you know I dig the whole low-budget Mission: Impossible vibe, but I'm gonna head back.
Mr. Ketch: The Men of Letters is an excellent fit for someone with our inclinations. You're a killer, Dean Winchester. And so am I. And if we go too long without something to track or trap or punch or gut. Well, things get a bit ugly, don't they? The Men of Letters keep me busy. They point me in a direction and 'bang' off to the races. It's not a bad life.
Mr. Ketch: “Yes, Toni. No one predicted she would go rogue No one but me. I had a sneak peek at what a neurotic, overreaching time bomb she was. We used to date.”
Mick: When we find a nest. We don't just charge ala John Wayne, guns a-blazing. We wait. We watch.
Mr. Ketch: Ten blood suckers. Give or take.
Dean: Two against ten. I like those odds.
Alpha Vampire: I'm old. I like living quietly. You've been making my life awfully noisy lately. You've killed so many of my children. I've seen your work... in England. I didn't get involved, because, well it's England. But America. Yes. America is my home. And it is time that you. Get. Off. My lawn.
Alpha Vampire: Clever. Clever boy.
Okay, Mom?
Sam: Look tonight was bad. No doubt. But the Alpha Vampire is dead. You're changing the world, and I want to be a part of it.
Mick: And your brother?
Sam: Give me some time.
