Somehow in the process of having an external hard drive hooked up to my laptop, a whole folder of photos & videos from VanCon 2016 just disappeared! It went from being a folder of several GB to a file of 1KB

Oh my god, that' scary! I've been having more problems with my laptop. I know I need to get files off it before it's too late but I always put off doing it.
Wow how lucky it was photos you still had on the camera! Gulp!
I know exactly what you mean though; I hit the same problem recently - my laptop was struggling with some applications and when I checked it was because my had drive was nearly full. I got a TB hard drive thinking that would be more than enough...LOL!
So I had 200+GB in iPhoto, and then another 20GB in Photo, so I thought I'd empty iPhoto of the older stuff first. Trouble was, I'd put a lot of those albums onto Flickr by their handy sych feature - which meant when I deleted them from iPhoto it helpfully deleted them from Flickr and Facebook. Grrrr. Eventually I found the only way to stop it was to switch the wifi off while I had iPhoto open. And I have to remember to do that all the time now.
Still at least I've got a few gigs off my machine onto a 2TB external drive now, so it's a start!
God, it must be maddening! I was using a writing program (Scrivener) but then decided just in case I would paste the pages into Word. Then, surprise, surprise! Two chapters missing!
