Questioning myself

Just curious...

Would you consider the stuff I make (Daily Fanart posts, any icons, headers, banners etc) to be fanart or am I just kidding myself? Seems like there are others in the fandom who truly make fanart with text and tons of layers and effects. I see pieces on Tumblr and here on LJ that are much more elaborate (not to mention beautiful). ( Read more... )

fanart, help, me myself and i

I think what you make is fanart and I love it and think it's stunning!

Thx Tracy. Just feeling a little insecure about what I've been posting is all.

Honestly? I don't know that there is a set definition of fanart, is there?
I'd count it as a range of creations starting from something that takes an original photo and amends it in some way, something that puts your personal touch or spin on the original piece, which is what you do - then all the way over to something that is totally new and original in its own right (maybe like the art petite_madame does).

So long story short, I'd say what you do with your edits is a form of fanart, yes.

None that I know of. Maybe that's the problem?
Thanks. Most people seem pretty open to whatever in the way of fanart, which is nice. I just see all this beautiful, amazing pieces on tumblr, look at my stuff and think...."Well this is crap." LOL

I do stuff that is more elabourate but I like everything people produce - there is so much variety. If you are dissatisfied with what you are doing, why not try something else? Ultimately you are playing with these things for your own enjoyment and if you aren't getting as much out of it as you want to, then do something different! :D

There is no definition of "fanart." It's art made by fans, which means why should some of it have more value than others? That way madness lies.

Don't let yourself feel inferior simply because other artists do different stuff. I love your art.

Thanks hun. I appreciate that.
I think the fact that fanart has no clear cut definition might be part of the problem. Sometimes it's hard for me to think of what I do as fanart when I just slap a couple of effects on a cap. :P

I do think it's fan art. I think the little changes you make to screen shots are beautiful.

as for the layers and text ect... as beautiful as they are, I think that sometimes less is more. I love how most of the time you just let an image speak for itself.

Thanks for the insight. So it's kind of like art in general...open to interpretation? I can definitely see that. I too have seen some fanart that I thought was over-done.

I love the simplicity that allows the pic to speak for it self...if that makes sense::DDDDD

I get that. A lot of times when I'm working on a cap it's hard to add a lot of effects because then the image would become muddied and the beauty that was once there would be gone.
