Oh, Donna. That had me bawling again. Donna was definitely the best companion, although I do love Rose and Martha was badass. But Donna was snarky and platonic and really really good for the Doctor, who more often than not has his head in the clouds. She really grounded him. And to see the difference between Donna as she became and Donna as she was having forgotten everything... it wasn't right. She had been a better person. She had such amazing character development, and then to lose it all... well, she'd better turn up again is all I have to say for the matter. Maybe in Torchwood.
And I really don't know how they'll top it. Really.
Definitely agree with you about Avatar - I also love how that despite the canon relationships, a lot of the show is gen. Like, Toph never gets a pairing, Zuko and Katara have a friendship, etc... I felt like they could have very easily made character interaction all about the romance, but they totally didn't - even among actual pairs. If they had just cut the makeout scene, it would have been even

I especially loved how, after Rose and Martha both falling so completely in love with the Doctor (which I didn't really mind, but still) Donna is so utterly 'meh!' about him. It made a wonderful change
