That time when we accidentally the Madman National Cosplay Heat

Aug 16, 2011 22:41

As usually happens when it comes to me and con reports I am already more than a month late in posting about this year's Supanova, so I'll cut right to the chase regarding how the Saturday went this year: we went and won the Perth heat of the Madman Cosplay Championships.

We were not expecting to win. Short of WCS, the Madman comp is the biggest ( Read more... )

Your costumes are gorgeous! And that skit looks like a lot of fun.

...I gotta say, though, that announcer might be my favorite. He is INTO THIS.

Haha, meet John Robertson! He's actually an old friend of ours, and now responsible for hosting something like half the cosplay events held anywhere in the country. Going by the way Supanova plasters his name and face all over the advertising banners for the cosplay comps now, they're very much aware he's as much of the attraction as the cosplayers themselves.

Thanks! You know you've done a good job on a costume when you can do a somersault wearing it and nothing falls off. XD

XD The part I was really worried about was the wig, actually - there are a lot of spikes styled into that thing. The trick is to tuck your head in and make sure you land on your upper back, so the wig never has to touch the floor. Of course, landing on your (practically bare! thanks to Aqua's outfit) back on a hard floor isn't much fun either. There may have been a fair bit of joyful celebrating that day when I found out there was a thin layer of carpet on the Supanova stage.

Basically, we were pretty lucky with the costumes we were doing that skit in. I've worn plenty that were more delicate/inconveniently spiky than Aqua's, and we managed to arrange it so the person who had to do handstands and other acrobatics (wig needed to be pinned in very firmly) wasn't the same one who had to do a quick wig change (wig needed to have no pins in it whatsoever). We're still quite proud of that. :)
