I have some magic-use questions that I'd like your opinions on. I'm very at sea when it comes to writing in this area, and just hearing other people's thoughts on the matter might help to solidify mine

1) Re: the circle... It depends, bigger picture, what you were going for.

If the caster is trying to open a portal to summon a demon, for example - they'd be outside the protection circle and the demon would appear inside of the circle. And unless something broke the circle from the outside, the summoned demon would be trapped within.

Spike: Spike showed up in the basement of the High School in the S7 season opener. Buffy had him move into Xander's apartment, and he wound up in the Basement of Buffy's house after being kidnapped by the First Evil.

Presumably, he did not spend a lot of time in the house in S6 because he didn't actually like anyone living there except for Buffy. And as much as he did seem to like Dawn, once he was able to make time for Buffy, he didn't really have much interest in her.
