I have a set of macro extension tubes I picked up on ebay a while back, and I experimented a while back with some old lenses. I didn't like what I was able to do with them due to the poor glass, and they sat in the back of a closet after I purchased the canon 100mm macro lens. Nice image of a lighter, but how do the ext tubes help. Could you have gotten this image with just the macro lens?

I can get really close with the macro lens, but moving the lens from the camera decreases the minimum focusing distance, so it allowed me to get even closer. I definitely have to experiment with it more. The tubes were cheap, ~$30 on ebay.

If I remember right, you have the 180mm? The big thing I'm worried about is the extra stress on the mounting, and it would be more severe with the longer lens. I used a ring-mounted tripod on a downward angle to support it, with a shutter release.
