As I was walking home yesterday I passed a luggage sidewalk sale. Since I need to invest in a gigantor suitcase before I head off, I looked rather closely at the goods. The man conducting the sale was very helpful and showed me all the features of the Big One (a 31" Samsonite). As the suitcase sat open on the sidewalk, I tried to imagine my life

it's amazingly easy to ascribe a soul to a bike. i've done it to every one i've owned since i got my first real mountain bike when i was about thirteen. that first bike is the only one i don't still, technically, own.

i suppose i do this to a lot of my major possessions--the only reason i still have that bass that you play is because i can't bear to get rid of something that was My Instrument for so long. it doesn't suit the way i want to play anymore, and it was never that great to begin with--and yet i'm still attached enough to it that it's not worth the (measly) amount of money i'd be able to get for it online for me to sell it.
