Reading beyond the lines

How pathetic is the film? Well, it almost made a certain long-haired movie critic hack off his humble curls. Mangal, mangal, forsooth!

- from here.

but what the piece doesn't mention is how close I came to actually letting scissored hands come close to amply-covered scalp. ( readallaboutit )

saw mangal last night, and your review just now. Right on, Raja...the movie is as unsure about Mangal as it is about its own purpose. one thing that annoyed me to no end, and you missed, were the inane fights mangal seemed to pick up with almost everyone from the 'acchoot' sweeper to especially brutal ones with one british officer (the guy who played captain russell's vice captain in lagaan).
About historical inaccuracies, Ketan Mehta wrongly projects ideas backwards. So Mangal is shown to be way ahead of his times talking about 'rule of the people', aka democracy, while everything else in the film shows his fight to be about everything but that (rani's taunts, grease issue, turning untouchable himself etc).
Disappointing fare.
On the other hand, i quite enjoyed a certain small(er) budget movie called 'Seher' this summer.

Ah yes, I heard interesting things about Sehar. Catch My Wife's Murder if you can, the film intrigued me considerably...

bah! a day earlier and this post could've saved me a good $20 and a headache! pathetic is *the* word! but i try to remind myself that it happens ever so often.. when the high-headed star rises above the talented actor. watever. i shall live... but keep the hair.. and help restore the style's lost glory.. the obnoxious pachyderms will fade away by next friday!
