We’ll Be Sweethearts After Tomorrow
shigepi
That one time Pi entered the dressing room and found Shige, half-naked shuffling into the shirt holes, he paid no attention. There was simply nothing so out of the ordinary with what he saw, and it wasn't anything interesting to begin with. Pi walked across the room, past Shige, and got his duffel. With a cap on to keep inconspicuous, he left the room without a word. Shige finally got himself through his shirt.
The next time Pi saw that he was, yet again, left with Shige alone in the dressing room; he realized how the silence spoke to him. It seemed to be encouraging him with something he hadn't seen before. Pi ignored it.
"Yamashita-kun, look at this," Shige suddenly spoke, breaking the silence. Pi looked over Shige's shoulder and looked at the notebook screen. Their pictures from the previous photo shoot had just been released.
"You look good here, Yamashita-kun," Shige commended as if it were nothing. The man over his shoulder nodded, and then wondered if Shige could actually feel the weight of his gaze from behind him.
He excused himself out of the room and went looking for Ryo.
The next encounter wasn't so different compared to the previous: it was just him, Shige and Tegoshi eating out for lunch, because the rest of the members were busy with god knew what. Tegoshi started playing with his food, shoving them into Shige’s mouth.
"What are you doing?" Pi wrinkled his noise.
Tegoshi laughed. "Look Yamashita-kun! Shige looks like a pig!"
Pi looked, and saw Shige with a mouth-full struggling to get it all down his throat. Pi didn't move. When Shige finally swallowed, war had begun.
Lunch had been productive; the most if Pi wouldn't call drinking with Akanishi productive, because there were no works nor outcomes.
"Are you naturally this close to Kato-kun?" Pi asked Tegoshi when it was just the two of them. Tegoshi looked up at the sky and admired the cloud that looked most especially like a giraffe. Tegoshi liked giraffes.
"Shige is a good person; you should hang out more with him, Yamashita-kun."
If drinking with Akanishi was productive, and Shige being a good person meant he was just dorky, then heaven refused to help the man.
That one time Pi found Shige in the bathroom of the dressing room squatting on the floor beside the toilet with red and swollen eyes, he didn't think twice. Pi shut the door, left, and decided that Shige was crazy.
Masuda passed by with a juice box in hand and blinked. "What happened?"
Pi pointed to the bathroom. "Someone’s..."
They exchanged looks for awhile before Masuda finally realized. ”Not again," he muttered under his breath and went looking for Koyama. Masuda came back with the man, along with Tegoshi pulling in an irate Ryo.
Pi stood at the far end of the room, watching this all go by before him, without him. They opened the bathroom door, Koyama the first to see Shige still on the floor, and Pi could see tears and tears on his face from his distance. He listened to their muffled conversation cautiously.
"It's okay, he doesn't mean it," Koyama stroked his back trying to soothe him.
"I mean what I said, and I’m not taking it back!"
"Shut up, Ryo."
"He's never going to learn, anyway."
"You’re never going to learn, Nishikido-kun."
Pi started to wonder from that far distance why he never knew what happened, why this happened, and how often it exactly happened. For awhile then after, he started to listen to the silence again. This time it screamed into his ear with conviction. Pi decided to listen.
They met outside the room where the vending machine sat available and ready for the thirsty like Pi. He found Shige there alone, back against the wall, feet apart and his head down, eyes still red and swollen.
Pi cleared his throat. "Sorry about awhile ago."
Shige looked up and shook his head. "No, I should be the one to say sorry, for letting you see me like that." Pi felt color rush to his face.
"I should have been supportive. I never involved myself in these situations, and I think I should. I don't want you to think I don't care." (and there was something about what he said that made Shige’s face flush with heat)
"I don't want to burden you, Yamashita-kun. It’s okay," Shige smiled. "Thank you."
Pi smirked, as if it were the best he could do then. He took him out drinking that evening, and decided for sure that Shige was a better drinking buddy than Akanishi was.
The next time Pi found himself alone in the dressing room with Shige again; he looked up and greeted him. Shige smiled, his face lit with a day's smile. "Let’s work harder today."
Sometime later when everyone was already present, both Pi and Shige engrossed themselves in a card game while other members focused on their own things-to-do. Pi looked above the deck of cards in his hand, and saw Shige staring right back at him through his cards. They laughed some, told jokes, and gave the members something to talk about amongst themselves. This was new, they thought. It could be the start of something good.
The next time Pi took Shige out drinking again, he saw the curve of Shige’s lips on his face and he felt a rush of something warm and sweet through his chest. Shige unconsciously pulled on the sides of his lips wider, and it made Pi flush.
"Why are you laughing?"
Shige shook his head and drank. "Nothing," he said, "this is just nice."
"What is?" Pi fumbled with his bottle of beer.
"This," Shige shrugged, "both of us."
That was that one time Pi thought it could all work out after all.
