Shige was allergic to cats, however he apparently had a cat of his own. He called this little fellow Wagahai.
"Wagahai?" Koyama asked when Shige finally decided to bring it up with him. No one knew of Wagahai, only Shige did, and only Shige could see him. "He's invisible?"
"No, of course not," he retorted. "He's just right there!"
Koyama stared at the blank corner he pointed out, and shook is head. "You haven't had enough sleep, have you Shige?" must be the jetlag, Koyama thought.
Shige walked out of the dining room and up to his room frustrated and misunderstood.
The next time Shige brought him up in a conversation, Koyama tripped on nothing.
"What was that??" he frantically got up to his feet and straightened out the wrinkles on his dress shirt.
"I told you, it was Wagahai." Shige claimed the cat just happened to be across his path. "You should have been more careful."
Koyama narrowed his eyes at him and shuddered.
"Wagahai is upset because you don't understand him."
"What is there to understand? There is no cat--" and then something scratched at his leg. "Ouch! What was that??"
For the next few weeks, Shige seemed satisfied. Koyama was arranging playdates between Nyanta and Wagahai, but he still didn't seem to will the existence of Shige's imaginary cat. That evening, Wagahai made an attempt to leave around presents from his litter box.
