Morning Has Broken
tegoshige

Sorry, she said to him. “There's someone else…”

Shige thought he could just walk away and go buy a pack of beer in an open convenient store in the heat of all this merriment and snow (oh, look: a pun), drink up and merry Christmas world, I’ve got no one special this year.

He thought she was someone special, someone he could finally share life with, had life given him anything else that was worth his while, but no, so Shige easily and completely gave up on love, and the hope to love someone. He just wanted someone to spend Christmas with, really; a slow and quiet house date that called for a little easy virtue, maybe, a lot of sweaters and scarves and hot chocolate with melty marshmallows in them. Some homemade love, if you will, but where’s the love now?

“What’s the real meaning of Christmas, huh?” he told longtime friend Tegoshi on his third can. “Ugh. And the beer tastes horrible.”

“I think it’s really supposed to taste bitter, Kato-kun,” he said, staring at his beer, only a quarter empty.

“Well, that’s rather bitter,” they both sighed.

“It’s okay, Kato-kun,” Tegoshi said almost apologetically, patting his back nervously. “There will be others,”

Shige sniffed. “Really?”

“Really.” Tegoshi smiled, sat almost completely apart from him.

“Next year, then,” Shige sounded a little tired, nevertheless determined (however slurred from his fourth can in the past hour); next year, definitely.

Tegoshi could only smile sadly and complain to himself the bitter taste of beer. Christmas Eve had been so gloomy that year, they both noticed.

The next year wasn’t so generous as to last year-had last year ever even been the least bit generous-nor had it been so forgiving on Shige’s chances on love. There were at least three girls, then an old man somewhere in between, and a whole lot of Tegoshi for the comfort and healing he needed from all that was and will possibly be (especially for that old man because really, where did come from?).

“It’s okay, Kato-kun,” Tegoshi said almost apologetically over ramen this time, because beer was horrible-tasting even if it did make depressed Shige forget about a lot of things (including his sanity that night, unquestionably). “There will be others. Next year again, ne?” he smiled sadly and sighed. Shige couldn’t forget that face, the guilt and questions that ran in him like wildfire.

He finally realized on Christmas Eve later that year while he stood in front of a café filled with people; family and friends, naturally, smiles and laughter filling the rich and vibrant aura with coffee and exchange gifts.

When everyone was inside with family and friends, Shige was out there alone and cold in the dark on a relatively significant day, and no one really seemed to care at least for awhile for him; who would, when they were surrounded by such a wonderful aura. Christmas had always given him a bright gold and silver aura, but that evening had particularly given him a rather blue color.

The snow beneath his feet was deep. There was barely anyone in the near vicinity at that time of the night; just a glowing fat man with a white beard in a ridiculous red suit standing on the opposite side of the darkened street, Tegoshi standing right beside him.

His heart leaped as he watched him walk towards the bright café.

“He-“

“I rushed over as fast as I could,” he breathed in deep. “Did something bad happen to you?” Tegoshi sounded worried. He must be thinking of another heartbreak, Shige thought.

He laughed. “Everything is fine,” the snow felt deeper beneath his feet.

“I thought I just wanted to see you, is all.”

Tegoshi smiled, bit his lip consciously. “It’s late… and it’s almost Christmas,” he stammered, glancing at his wristwatch. “Isn’t there anyone…”

Shige could feel a drunken haze of color and shape come into his vision as he looked at Tegoshi. “In fact, there is someone.”

He reached out and grabbed hold of Tegoshi’s hand, pushed it into the pocket of his coat.

“Kato-kun-“

“I’ve been wanting to spend Christmas with someone special,”

He wasn’t anyone special, really, but somehow, Shige felt that he had, in fact, unconsciously and still, reluctantly fallen in love with someone throughout the past Christmases he’s spent being single with longtime friend Tegoshi crying and laughing at failed and stupid relationships and unrequited love-and it felt great.

“I feel cold right now and I really just want to spend a nice and quiet Christmas at home and I deliberately walked out here in the snow to pick you up, so,”

Tegoshi’s hand shifted in his pocket. Shige felt his fingers threading through his.

“Kato-kun, you’re holding my hand.”

“Yes, I know.”

“It’s warm,” Tegoshi said, smiled contentedly at Shige. He smiled back.

Shige made sure there was something tiny and significant hanging at the arch above his doorstep when they reached home.
