“Please…No…Chimera…Stop!” The white intensified Jamie’s migraines, but that pain meant nothing. The headaches were only a psychosomatic reaction to her reawakened memories of the real trauma, and she needed the blank white surfaces of her repainted room on which to project those memories. The white absorbed her past…

It was her twelfth birthday. “The door’s locked, Dr. Sam.”

“Then, it’s a good thing I have a key, isn’t it,” he said gravely.

Jamie was not supposed to know about the surprise birthday party her father was throwing for her, but she had seen the notation in her father’s day planner in someone else’s handwriting. When she asked Dr. Sam why her father would let someone else write in the appointment book that was just for the two of them, he turned a frightening color, mentioning her father’s new friend.

Behind the unlocked door, Jamie saw pink cake, lavender balloons, and red blood. The remembered blood seeped from her mind on to the white walls, traveling inexorably toward the white floor. Her father stood over the bodies, looking at her with eyes that were not his. Her nanny, Letticia, and her Yorkie-Scottie-Westie puppy, Chimera, were both dead. Jamie focused on the razor. “Eighteen minutes,” said her father. “I daresay I could shave a few minutes off that time with practice.” He smiled…

“Please…No…Chimera…Stop!” The phone kept ringing, so she picked it up to make it stop.

“Your father is making progress.” It was Samuel. “He actually wants Chess gone now. Unfortunately, I had to bargain with Chess to quiet him; I gave him Peter’s queen.”

Jamie winced. “Is Chess actually watching me?”

“Yes,” answered her godfather. “I’m sorry.”

“Can’t be helped,” replied Jamie. “I’m a tough cookie, now, not a catatonic girl who needed her memories blocked to function.”

“You know? How?,” he asked, not hiding his concern.

“Long story,” she replied. “A psychotic killer, home brewed drugs, and daddy issues. Just my usual with a twist of lemon.”

Samuel continued, “So, you know that Letticia was actually…”

“My mother,” she finished. “Peter Fleming’s paid egg donor pawn, which got too attached.”

“Will you be alright?,” he asked.

“How do I escape my genes, Samuel?,” she countered.

“Peter loves you, and so did Letticia,” he replied.

“And he’s a killer, and she’s one of the many corpses at his feet.” Jamie sighed. “Dangerous or dead isn’t a choice.”

“The fact that you still recognize that means there’s hope.” He hung up.
