Except John was intimately familiar with the thin thread of emotion the Doctor hadn't quite been able to erase from his voice, and something in John's body, already loose with adrenaline, had thrummed in bitter recognition. He hadn't known much, at this point, but he'd known that sound, and it had cracked him all the way open, raw and aching like he'd never let himself be, ever. It had cracked him open, and the force of it made him swing around, had him grabbing the other man by the front of his coat, had John staring the Doctor down and demanding whether that had been his war.
