Running off to work in, like, five minutes so I lack the time I need for a proper and detailed response, so I'll go with short and heartfelt:

You're 100 per cent right about the unhelpfulness and wrong-ness of the "poor guy" mentality, and you're 100 per cent amazing for sharing your story. Because these are the sorts of thoughts that occur when people exercise their free will and right to choose, and nothing - nothing - should ever trump that. No one's happiness is anyone else's responsibility, and no one's deliberately chosen malicious actions are ever anyone else's fault, especially a victim/target.
