I have exactly two real-life friends that I would call such (a few acquaintances, but not close ones). The most I've had at any given time was three (including those two). In all three cases we had some significant fandom connection that we bonded over, so that the awkwardness was burned up in the fires of OMGSQUEEEE!ness.
The internet is so helpful, bringing the few-and-far-between perverted fans all together in one place so I can interact with them.
(And then of course there's the text thing; it's so much easier to communicate by writing than by mouth.)

Me too. Animals are honest and easy to talk to. They don't talk back and argue or create unnecessary conflict. I've always been closer to my pets than to people.
I love Bear and Monette. Just reading their books makes me want to write. Though they also make me feel ridiculously inferior because their writing is so awesome.
